    Hello,

looking for any advise or experience on a saltwater spin reel to use. Mainly for beach / surf fishing. Typically walk out to cast then stand waist deep. Try to keep out, but it definitely will get hit with rogue waves and in the sand once in awhile. Snook, tarpon, whatever is cruising the sandbar. Currently have a 6000 size and like that (looking to stay in 5000/6000).

So many out there, currently looking at the penn spinfisher VI but open to others. I really like the idea of a sealed gear area and drag but not to familiar. Dont mind spending a little, but trying to keep under 300.

    thanks in advance

Because they can be set to “click” and the line spools off when you get a bite. Then you “lock” it!

I have two Spinfishers and absolutely love them!

One is a VI 2500 that I use for inshore casting and also for freshwater when I'm home in Wisconsin. The other is maybe a V, 3500 or 4000 size Liveliner I use for bait fishing for Snook, Jacks, and anything that will bite, really. I also use it for catfish, and live bait fishing in Wisconsin.

I also have 2 of the "Clash" spinning reels from Penn, and am very happy with them as well. For a budget option, the "Fierce" series is a good value.

When I originally started looking for spinning gear for saltwater fishing, it seemed like Penn and Shimano were the most popular options. It sounded like the Shimanos were a little bit smoother, but the Penns were a little tougher. Based on how I treat my gear, I went with Penn. :D

Thanks for the input so far. I was planning on sticking with a spinning but like the #9. Any issues with corrosion?

Thats my main concern is corrosion resistance and keeping it clean. For the spinfishers, just a rinse after use? How often do you disassemble and deep clean? Have you noticed much sand intrusion?

Im also in WI, but get down to florida for a couple weeks every year. I do alot of salmon fishing here in the fall from the piers or beach so like having the large reel.

The only time one of my spin fishers was disassembled was when I "sunk" My mom's boyfriend's boat, and all of my fishing gear sat out overnight with waves crashing on the boat and spraying them. :anonymous:

Other than that, I have rinsed them off occasionally. They are just work horses. I was actually going to edit my original comment to emphasize how much I really really like those reels, lol!

Also, where in Wisconsin are you located? I am in Eastern Jefferson county. We have group camping trips and trail runs occasionally.

My mom and her boyfriend spend their winters down there, so I go down for 2 weeks every winter and just fish like a maniac and have a blast hanging out at the local restaurants.

I also made it down to the keys last winter and really enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to. It's funny how many people from the Midwest I run into when I am down there.

I live and salt water fish in Florida. I would recommend the Penn Spinfisher. Rinse if off good , if you plan on getting it salt water splashes and sand in it. I would take it apart after the trip for a good cleaning and oil

Think you need to mention how much $ you want to spend. You really get what you pay for.

I use a Shimano Saragoas SW6000 for bottom fishing off the boat.

Thanks for the info. Located in Green Bay. Ive seen some posts for WI trips, Ill have to keep an eye out.

Thanks Curt for the input. Figured I could rinse after each use then deep clean after trip. Assuming its pretty similar to other spin reels for taking apart.

looking in the $150-$300 range. Ive been looking at diawa and penn but will definitely look into the shimano as well

Penn, that’s all you need. Pick the size and model you like and you’ll be good to go.

I have a couple of the okuma cold waters. One of the regular open faces and one of the low pros. I would reccomend either of those.

I've thought about getting one of those. So, definitely worth the extra $$ over a Spinfisher?

If you beat your gear, definitely. I use the Slammer when I'm in the surf, resists the sand and salt well. It feels more solid while being smoother in it's operation. Spinfisher is no doubt awesome as well, just depends if you need those extra features.

I appreciate the endorsement. It might just be the nudge I needed to pick one up. I've been loving Penn since I jumped on board.

I was looking at the slammer 4 and looks solid. For about the same price the saragosa is ipx8 rated (rated for submersions). Not sure the real world difference between a 6 and 8 rating. Both seem great choices.

Think Ive narrowed down to the penn slammer 4 or the shimano saragosa. They seem to be on a comparable level and about same price point. Performance wise im sure both are way more than adequate.

Well I'm biased for the Shimano since I own one.

Plus looks better than all black.

How is the maintenance on it (the shimano) Pretty straightforward? I usually just start at the top and work my way down. Clean each part and lubricate. I open the main gear area to check but try not to touch if I dont have to.
