    Hi All.

Need some advice. Picking up new 2022 off road shortly. Toyota dealership want to sell me electronic rust proofing device. I researched in and no one seems to say anything good about it. What is the next best option?

I went to Line-X, and they charged me $600 to spray the frame. If you are in a place where they salt the roads, then you should do it. 4Runner is such a nice truck, you should save it from rust.

Look at the frame, the anti-rust material is clearly visible.

Also do a break in oil change, after first 1000 miles.

Once I get my TRD Pro, I will go to Line-X again. Their second location promised me $400.
I live in WA state, we don't use salt here. But I love my 4Runner, I will do anything to keep it in great shape.

That dealer has no shame. Electronic rust protection is for boats in salt water, not cars.
    http://www.bellevillerustcheck.com/electronic-rust-proofing-does-it-work/

    http://corrosion-doctors.org/Car/car-electronic-rust.htm

People claim good rust prevention with Fluid Film and Woolwax.

I would not use line x, or anything like that. You can get micro cracks and trap moisture underneath causing rust.

Fluid film or woolwax or cosmoline. I personally prefer woolwax out of the 3

Agree woolwax, fluid film, NH oil, crown…. There is also a new one out from the pub blaster folks.

I had fluid film sprayed on mine, removed the spare tire and them spray up in there also. As Muhammed's picture suggests hit that area also behind the rear wheel wells.

I went over kill and put fluid film on a wax applicator and did my trailer hitch and then I also did those small bolts in the front wheel wells that hold the trim in place. Another friend of mine suggested spraying fluid film on wax applicator pad for those sensitive areas and to make it look nicer, did the same with skid plate.

I see rusty hitches everyday around here on all vehicles, just surface rust but looks awful. I read much the same about non oil products that they can trap moisture and a friend at Dodge dealer advised the same. He said there are a lot more wiring harnesses and electronics and that they do not advise the old school rust proofing anymore as if you have an issue now you have to "chip" that stuff away.

Too bad there is no $250 option to have the frames rustproofed at factory (novel idea).

On my old Explorer from the 90's I had the thick stuff put on but that was a much different vehicle. I actually had my hitch sprayed later with undercoating from Autozone which held up really well. My plan is to do the same on 4R someday. I would have to remove the bumper but it could be sanded/mask the area and spray just hitch with undercoating. I am a bit OCD though, I just like to keep things nice

I used the newer PB Blaster Surface Shield based on The Repair Geek's videos on YouTube. It took me a few hours and a lot of spray cans, maybe 2-3 hours and 8-9 cans. I used a 360 hose attachment and a female to male spray can adapter, both from eBay.

Did it with the car on the ground, safety goggles, respirator, and wore clothing that I didn't care if they got ruined. I was able to get the entire frame (inside and out), the KDSS accumulator area, area around the spare tire (taking it out makes that part easier), the area under the front skid plate when I did my 1000 mile oil change, and a few other rust prone spots according to previous threads. I still have to get the inside of the doors through the water drain ports but I'll have to wait until it gets warmer to really flush that road salt out with a hose.

There are some areas that are close to the exhaust pipes that will evaporate the wax so if you noticed the wax gone from there after a long drive then that is what happened. Also, the wax has some staying power so definitely try to wear PPE and not get it on anything you don't want it on, i.e. truck interior, nice clothes, your lungs or eyeballs, etc.

The thread was on the other 4Runner forum:

How did you lift your 4Runner to do all that?

I didn't lift it, had a decent amount of room underneath with stock ground clearance. It was a lot of shimmying around on a flattened cardboard box but I was able to get to a lot of what I needed to. It would definitely be much easier on some ramps or a lift and an air compressor but, sadly, I don't have those at the moment.

I may also paint the exhaust system with high heat primer and paint but those seem to be out of stock right now.

You like the coverage of the PB stuff, can you compare it to fluid film or any of the others?

Hey, my 2022 TRD off-road is on the way, should be here in two weeks. Does your off-road have kdss?
When you are spraying anti-rust material, make sure you don't mess around with the KDSS housing.

So far it seems like it gets into all the crevices, I sprayed it on when it was still relatively cool outside though. I haven't used any of the other protectorants, althought I have the CRC one that I have not used since I've read that it does not spread as well and it is essentially toxic.

Nice, congratulations! Don't forget about the break-in period! Mine does have KDSS, it was a requirement for me and they didn't have any in the NY, NJ, CT area so I had to go to PA. To rust proof it, I just removed its skid plate and really sprayed the hell out of that whole area. When I put the plate back on, I also put anti-seize on the bolts, and then sprayed more Surface Shield on top of the screws lol. You should still remove the plate and clean it occasionally after off-roading though.

You actually do want to mess with it, you should take the accumulator skid plate off and spray woolwax or fluid film and replace the skid. Salt and dirt and mud will gather there and corrode the connections which is the most common point of kdss failure

Woolwax- gets a little messy but works !!

Also lubricates your suspension while protecting at the same time

Ouch, not very warm and welcoming.

even when I disagree with folks, I don’t find joy at their punishment.

Dont spray woolwax on the rear spring seat. You’ll get an annoying creek or pop as tje spring will get lubed up and make noise because it cann shift and move. The tiny amounts of movements is very noisy. Ask me how I know lol,

Oh shit - ok- I actually Woolwax my Tundra and haven’t noticed any issues but it’s also a leaf spring rear

My wife’s Runner came with the Zebart crap and I have not applied any Woolwax to it - don’t know if I should apply over it or if it would do any good??

Is this noticeable when stopping and going slowly like in a drive thru? Mine made that noise after being rust proofed with a oil base type. Wonder if it’s that. It isn’t constant, but it was there.

yeah, basically it happened on little movements, like when finally comming to a stop. I hit the seat area with a bit of brake kleen. Eventually it goes away

considering taking my ORP to krown - considering telling them to skip the body work drilling and just stick to the frame - thoughts?

I definitely would not drill it. I would research fluid film vs krown

Seems to be mixed opinions here. I chose fluid film because even dealers selling full frame pickups around me suggested fluid film.

I am not sure if there an one hundred percent right answer.

Woolwax is better than fluid film I used both. Pretty much the same but woolwax stays on thicker and better. I would use cosmoline if I lived in the rust belt
