I have followed this RUST issue over the past few months.

I purchased a 2017 SR5 4runner (4X4) to access muddy ramp along our many local river. I purchased a certified unit.

After checking recently I found minimal rust in a few location on the underbody such as on the exhaust pipes, drive shaft, drive ends of the front transfer case. None on the inside of the frame or under rock shields as many describe.

I learned at purchase that the first 10 months of this vehicle was spent in NEW JERSEY, now its current home is in Texas. I discussed this possible issue with the general manager who felt no issues would develop and no surface preparation were necessary. A correct statement from Toyota which is expected.

Should I be concerned and begin to coat areas where heat isn't a concern? I appreciate any constructive comments. thanks....td

    All that sounds normal.

As with any 4x4, keep it clean after an outing and all will be fine.

I use galvanizing paint on the rust spots then a couple of days later I use rustoleum high performance paint.. 2016 runner looks good on all the frame and trailer support welds ..
I use small wire brushes to remove the flaking rust/paint.
I did paint the front and rear gear boxes and did some engine cover painting.

I use zinc chromate on aluminum .. mercrusier lower unit drive..good primer for ALUM..

thanks, I appreciate your input. I have little experience with rust on a vehicle. I want to believe using a pressure washer on any concerning areas with a follow-up coat of Rustoleum rust inhibitor should correct any issues. Not living along the coasts (everything rusts); rust on unprimed metal on a UT locally is expected. Thanks TD
