Was wondering if anyone uses this on their 4runners? Was watching a you tube video where he stated on the 6 things to keep your vehicle running to 300k. Happy new year!

Techron or BG 44K are the only ones I use.

Run Top Tier gas and save your money on stuff like this. Not saying it's bad, just not convinced this stuff works. If I was going to use an injector cleaner, I'd go with Techron. All the diesel guys around here swear by it.

Are you experiencing symptoms of dirty injectors? No? Can't fix what ain't broke.

Just remember any cleaning product you use has to go through the catalytic converters. You can smell it in the exhaust. So it isn't a case of "can't hurt to try".

Fuel has state and federal mandated detergents in it that are added as part of a package when the transport truck is filled from the same local refineries all gas stations use. No need to add anything extra.

200K here and never added anything. Just use good fuel and change your oil regularly if you want longevity. The 1GR-FE is pretty much bulletproof.

This brought up a recent thread,

I saw an earlier post regarding adding paint thinner for PO430 Code. It actually started calling in the "PT" treatment.

I only use top tier gas, don’t need fuel additives

OP I think this is good advice, as Top Tier gas has more than the legally-required minimum additives. Who sells Top Tier? Check for yourself at that link, but in my area it tends to be the more expensive vendors: 76, Chevron, Exxon-Mobil, Shell, et al., and Costco.

You may think, as I did, that everyone sells that, but many do not: Gulf, Sam's Club Gas, and others.

If you add a bottle of higher quality injector cleaner to your gas maybe once or twice every oil change-- sometimes I buy gas at Sam's Club or Gulf-- what is the harm?

Techron every now and then (25K). I don't think these things do anything. It is like taking a vitamin C every now and then, does it really make a difference? :notsure:

Top Tier fuel is going to be your best best. Polyether Amines (PEA) - originally sold as Chevron Techron - are the only fuel additives proven to clean the fuel system. If the product doesn’t contain PEA, it is probably just various petroleum distillates and a waste of money.

I primarily fill up with Top Tier fuels (Texaco and QT in my area) and run a tank full of Techron every 5k miles before I change the oil.

Not all top tier fuels have the same amount of detergent additives.

So it can be beneficial to use a Techron fuel additive.....about once every oil change.

Not only will it help clean fuel injectors but it was also help reduce fuel dilution.

Fuel dilution can cause an increase in engine wear metals so the techron additive helps combat that.

If you sit in traffic a lot, do short trips, let the truck sit for a while or don't regularly get the engine up to temp, you would especially benefit.

dont get fooled by circle K and the red and yellow and think its Shell - SOMETIMES it is but a majority of the time it isnt. I have a Citgo refinery about 10 miles from the house. I usually will go with Shell, Costco or Citgo. All three are top-tier. I wish i had a chevron or exxon by me.

Consumer Reports did research and concluded that using top-tier DOES matter.

this is particularly important with modern cars. Direct Injection, low tension rings, hybrid drivetrain engines need better quality fuels. Realistically, Top Tier fuel standards should be minimum fuel quality for modern cars.

i cant disagree with your statement. Usually when i do a road trip and remember to do it, i will throw 2-3 techron in the back and will put it in on long road trips. But 99% of the time i just always will use a Shell or Exxon/Chevorn if i see one on the trip. Techron is good stuff. But like many youtube channels tell you, it is not a fix but preventative maintenance. If you're having fuel related issues, its probably too late for a miracle in a bottle.

i am blessed to have a wonderful wife who also really really enjoys the 4R. She knows we only use top-tier gas and has even as gone as far as to pay one of my sons friends, who is a mechanic, to come over and change the oil - the way i like it done. Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and an OEM filter. i was traveling on business and she coordinated with him to change the oil. At the time we had the OEM skid plate and she knows how to get under there and help get the bolts started. (Proud husband moment)

    It should be.

I hear a higher grade of Top Tier (Top Tier Plus) is going to be an option at some places now.

Her dad sold industrial hand tools (Made in USA) for 30+ years. Whenever i needed a tool he magically had one sent to my house. When he retired, he gave me 4 complete top/bottom tools chests packed with tools. Easily 75-100k worth of tools alone. Ive used them 30+ years and never had a tool fail on me. I once was in a bind and needed a ratcheting wrench and ran to HF. I put some pressure on it (nothing crazy) and it broke sending my knuckles into the frame. That was 4-5 years ago, and i can still feel that pain today. Quality tools matter. i have some tools that i dont even know what they do. When he comes over i ask him.

I’ll tell you what, I took a road trip over new years to a national park here in Florida, and had to pass a driver on a 2 laned road. So I womp on the gas, and man did it stink good. I don’t necessarily red line it, but she ate, went from 50-75 pretty quickly, and just remember laughing because it smelt like I got on it

feel free to apply some common sense. If Top Tier gas is significantly more expensive than discount gas in your area, then going with a non-Top Tier brand is ok… just make sure it’s a station that sees a lot of turnover and appears to keep up with its facilities.

Walmart/Sam’s Club/Murphy’s is generally fine for your 4Runner. It’s basically late-90s/early-2000s tech; you don’t have any of the new technology that makes it more sensitive to fuel quality.
Yes, Top Tier fuel and Techron (or equivalent) fuel system cleaner will help keep things running like new, but nothing will self destruct if you don’t use it.

Don’t forget. Costco is top tier. You can Google the list of top tier brands. I have citgo (top tier) and across the street is speedway. Not top tier. Speedway costs more. The refinery for citgo is maybe 10 miles away.

Correct. 1GR-FE engine is an ancient design. That is why it is so awesome

Cleaner fuel system, port injectors and intake valves are the main benefits in this case.

No direct injection components, low tension rings etc. if we were talking a 2025 6th Gen, I would stress using Top Tier fuel

I go with the cheapest gas around and somehow my engine hasn’t blown up yet… I’ll throw whatever injector cleaner is on sale in a couple times a year. All is fine. You guys worry too much.
