I'm close to purchasing an awning to fit on a Prinsu rack. I'm torn between the 6.5 x 8 and the 8 x 8. I like the way the 6.5 awning looks, seems more balanced stowed away. I would really like the extra covered area the larger awning offers. Those with the 6.5 x 8, do you wish you had chosen the larger one? Is there really that much of a difference? I'm most likely going to purchase a ROAM in a couple of weeks and I'm unsure what size awning I should go with.

Thank you for your valued opinions

    Edit: I'm an idiot, this is the 6.5x8. I had a 6.5x6.5 that I traded up to a 6.5x8, not an 8x8.

I'm guessing this is the 6.5?
Do you have a pic of the 8?

I've been thinking about this for weeks now and still have a hard time deciding.
IMO the 6.5ft fits perfectly on the 4R when closed, but the trade off is obviously that it provides less protection against rain/sun when open.
The 8ft on the other hand seems like the perfect size once open but looks slightly awkward on the roof when closed.

I've been looking at the ARB one because I like the light in the center of the awning vs on the side like other have. The ARB is 8.2ft and most of the other brands are slightly smaller at 8ft. It doesnt seem like much of a difference, but I can definitely see it once closed on the rack. The 8ft does look slightly less awkward than the ARB one.

I wish they'd offer a 7.5ft option, it would be perfect.

I dont think the 6.5 would be worth it. Maybe for 1 person. For a family, nope.

I'm an idiot, I had a 6.5x6.5 and that was dumb small. That is the 6.5x8, my bad. The 6.5x8 works well for the wife and I. But that's all we shelter and camp with. I don't think it'd work well for more than 2. The 6.5x8 does fit the 4Runners roof pretty much perfect

Just went through the same mind game of the two sizes and ended up with the 6.5x8 Roam with Ironman quick release bracket.

My logic was being realistic about my use/needs. We mostly use it for picnics, stopping to enjoy backroads scenery, etc during the day (no camping). So just wanted a little shade here and there for the two of us.

We also have a “3/4” (standard length) Victory rack, not full length and I didn’t want the extra weight and bulk of the 8’ cantilevered out to the front hood . I also like the look (scale?) and portability of the 6.5 vs. the 8 on the 4Runner body

It’s a personal thing. Suggest you:

    A) Decide which one really, (Yes, REALLY) best meets your needs for most of your missions requiring awnings

    Then:

    B) Decide which one you think looks the best

Buy it and go enjoy it!

Let us know which way you go!

@Roothog please follow up with some pics & details on what you decide, including mounting solutions. I’ve considered an awning for my Prinsu rack but am on the fence about whether I need it or not.

From the responses above, I'm leaning towards a 6.5x8 based on:
    - Look/fitment on the 4R
    - It's just me and my wife.

Roam 8x8 awning for me. Currently mounted on a 3/4 Prinsu rack with quick release mounts. We also have the awning room too, but haven’t used it yet. We have 2 kids an a dog so the extra space was preferable for us.

Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of them. We just chose Roam so it matched our RTT.

That Ironman quick release bracket is a great idea, thanks for the suggestion. I see it can be secured with a lock also.
