    Hi,

I'm setting up a new diff with new ring and pinion. Based on the pattern I'm seeing, the coast side of the gear seems ok to me, but the drive side seems to be too far to the toe side. This suggests I need a thicker shim, but backlash seems ok. I just want some verification or correction about my interpretation of the pattern. I have pics attached of the patterns 20211016_095039.jpg 20211016_095049.jpg 20211016_095100.jpg

Is this an aftermarket ring and pinion? There should be backlash specs. somewhere, possibly even engraved on the ring gear. The drive side is where you need to be right on, that is where 99% of driving is, the coast side not so much. Pinion depth is shim sensitive, is this the shim you're talking about? Using a 'crush' sleeve or a solid spacer collar with shims?

Aftermarket Motive gear 4.11 ring and pinion. The instructions from Motive say .007-.009" backlash. I'll be using a crush sleeve. I'm following the factory manual which has me checking the pattern before the crush sleeve and oil slinger are installed.

The pattern confuses me sometimes, I think I'm pretty similar to the left most pattern in the attached figure, but I've always shot for the pattern in the right most picture. But both patterns are considered acceptable (at least according to Yukon gear).

The pattern on the right looks better, my opinion. The first time I was ever involved with a rear gear swap (a 9" Ford) we ended up with a "howler", when ever you would let off the gas, it would howl like some dirt track late model stock car. It was at a later date a person who had done this for a looong time said, "your coast pattern is deep." Ok, I guess. Yukon should know what they're talkin' about!
