I've had a bad water heater and hose clamp tgat have caused overheating 3 times over the 200,000 miles on this engine. It runs great. BUT, I bought a supercharger 8 years ago and can't stop myself from getting it installed. While doing the SC install, I decided to upgrade the injectors from stock 245cc to 295cc. Sooo, now that I'm that far into the engine, should I go ahead and replace the head gaskets? Heads? And if so, how many hours am I adding to the project? While I have the throttle body and intake removed, I'm also replacing heater hoses, fuel pressure regulator, and heater control valve. Anything else? This is more of a bucket list compulsion than an ecomic decision. This is not a daily driver, mostly offroad and towing.

I would replace the head gasket because you're going to be adding extra stress to an already questionable head gasket. I would only replace the head if you see cracking between the valves or sparkplug hole, this is a common thing on 5vz above 250k. You'll be adding a lot of time and money onto the project.

You can do it yourself, the heads are easier to remove than the I4 engine, this doesn't mean it's easy to do. Watch the timmy video on rebuilding a 5vz for more info.

Any idea how many more hours once I'm already down to the fuel rails?

I can't speak from experience with that engine because I have the I4, I know a lot about that engine. You should be ready to at least do a timing belt job, and removing the exhaust manifold, and pulling off some belt pulleys.

I think you'd be around the 13 minute mark, but you should make sure they didn't remove anything you haven't.
