I’m no expert in gears, but that doesn’t sound like a noise that gears would make. My stock diff makes a tiny sound at around 60 mph on light throttle, but the noise is clearly a whine. In your situation, it almost sounds like something is rubbing or grinding.

About the gear oil smell, is the smell “renewed” every time you drive it? If the smell gets worse every time you drive it, maybe they routed a breather into the cab? I’ve heard some people routing it into the cubby where the bottle jack is, unfortunately, that makes the inside stink. The other possibility is that a messy mechanic got some gear oil inside the cab when working on it, and the smell is lingering.

Good luck, and keep us updated.

I agree, it sounds similar to that vid. And I learned something new because I didnt know that’s what bad lash sounds like.

Hopefully the place that did the install or who provided the differential will fix this for you. It’s definitely not right.

But what’s up with the gear oil smell?
