I live in Southern CA near the recent Airport Fire in Orange County. As a retired firefighter I know that soot and ash gets into everything especially after Santa Ana winds. We finally got some significant rain and finally washed down all the soot/ash. Recently changed out the engine and cabin filter in my wife's RAV4. Both were covered in ash. Decided to check the filters on the 4Runner (in service 5/24, 11k miles). Needless to say, I ordered both filters and replaced. Protect your engine and lungs. If you live in an area affected by wildfire inspect and replace the filters in your car. Also, change out your furnace filter in your house. Cheap insurance!

My cabin air filters on both family cars had some visible ash and dark grey filter elements. Replaced with new.
