What are the options and challenges to adding a rear locker. I see Eaton has a product.

There’s air, electronic and maybe lunchbox. I’d go electronic because air leaks and lunchbox (if available) is not selectable.

I had the locker itch a few years ago. The Eaton e-locker seemed like the best option. There was a lot of brain bashing deciding if I really needed it. After wheeling ALF for a few years the ATRAC does everything I need. I never did get a locker. The vid below is from a Moab trip. Hells Gate. There are only 3 times that a locker would (may?) have been helpful.

Too bad Eaton doesn't have the Truetrac for the fifth gen. It's a fantastic limited slip.

Atrac is your lockers. That's why they don't offer them. They have limited slip rears. I haven't experienced any slip I can feel. I was looking at ECGS gear change. They offered lockers or limited slip. Limited slip is more dependable, works all the time. The old 4runners with lockers had a smaller ring and pinion than regular the regular 4runners. I watched the Atrac video on YouTube. I watched two calm older guys demonstrating calmly what's best to use in different terrain situations. Now I understand more what, why and when. I was going to get another limited slip installed if I was doing the stump swap with ECGS. Can't use locker or Atrac above 5 mph. Limited slip always working.

So I'm leaning towards SR5/Limited. What is the largest ring gear that will fit the stock housing? Is there an issue will axel length? Is there a Toyota LSD?

No rear LSD fitment for 5th gen 4Runners, period. (unfortunately - or at least, there is none that 4WP and the internet knows of)

^^^To add, Toyota uses the brakes to simulate a LSD. It’s cheaper for them.

A-TRAC ≠ Lockers. My ORP has both A-TRAC and a locker. The main difference between a locker and A-TRAC is that the lockers are proactive, while A-TRAC is reactive. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not bashing A-TRAC, or any of the other ABS-based traction control systems. Downhill Assist Control/Crawl Control is amazing for descending the slippery slope, for example. But A-TRAC and lockers are different tools, and while some of their capabilities overlap, some of them don’t.

What's this nonsense? You can leave the rear locker engaged up to the the top speed in 4low. A-Trac is useless in slippery terrain like sand, deep snow, and mud.
