Last summer I swapped the auto in my 95 4runner for a manual trans. It was out of a 91 4runner. I was in a hurry to get the rig back on the road, so I didn't freshen it up. Wish that I had. It started hanging up in 4th gear. The 3vz is slow enough as it is, so losing 4th is bad. So, it's on the bench waiting on parts. The input shaft end is worn out where it goes into the pilot bearing, third gear is smoked on the thrust surface and that ruined the shoulder on the main output shaft.
Moral of the story is when swapping out a major component pull it apart and check it. Sure, would have saved me some down time. I you fellas want I can include some Picts showing what I found.

Slightly off topic, but I have a '94 with a blown motor and the R150F Manual Tranny. Is there a way to verify if its usable/ any good still without pulling it? I'd be interested in figuring out if its any good, because I could potentially sell it then.

About all you can do is pull the drain plug for a sample. see if it has any metal in it. shift it through all the gears. If there all there, without splitting the cases that all I know of the check. Bad thing is these are not equipped with a magnetic plug. The magnet is up in the case. The only debris you will see would be brass from the synchro's.

That rough pitting and groove, that's supposed to be a flat surface... Main output shaft is toast.

This is third gear that is, (or is supposed to be) in contact with that flat surface. It's supposed to be flat. It's toast as well. so, here I am waiting on parts. Years ago, I used to get impatient with shops taking their sweet time fixing my stuff. shoes on the other foot now. They want to do repairs in a timely fashion but have the same part issues.

This is the fourth gear synchro. Third is just as bad...

These transmissions are picky about oil. GL-4 is what's commonly recommended. Perhaps years of GL-5 contributed to this synchro wear.

What do you think the R150F would be worth if I was to sell it? Has over 430,000 km on it in unknown condition. It worked fine last time the vehicle was running according to the previous owner, which was pretty recently. I'd say it was running about a month ago before the engine blew. I was going to maybe list it for $1,000-$1,500 CAD

Seeing that you have removed the tranny before, how hard is it to take out anyway?

If the trans is good, 1000 is a bit low. But because you're not a parts dealer, and won't be able to warrantee, a thousand buck, as is would be pretty fair in my book. If the oil is clear, and it will shift through all the gears, that is!

When I installed the trans I put gl-4 in it, but the donor rig had 160,000 miles so who knows. It will have GL-4 75/90 when I'm done!

Nice! Maybe I'll pull it eventually and take a look. It shifts through all the gears nicely, so that would be a win if I can sell it eventually.
