    Hello All,

I currently just got a 2006 4th gen 4x4 SR5 and have some questions on using the 4 wheel modes. I was originally told by a few people that you shouldn't use 4H wheel settings on Dry Ground, Use it in slippery, snow, mud, sand, grass applications only. But reading the manual, it says you can use the 4H wheel selection on ALL types of surfaces and change from 2 wheel to 4H under the speed of 65 miles per hour. Please help me to better understand.

If you have the center differential lock bottom you can run on 4hi on dry pavement unless you lock the center differential. That is one of the things I like the most about 2003-2009 models.

As @Libagui mentioned you can run 4H with center diff unlocked on dry pavement.
IMO the best way you make use of the multi-mode 4wd system is use 2wd on dry pavement. Use 4H with center diff unlocked in wet and snow conditions on pavement. If that's not enough for deep snow then turn on the center diff to lock 50:50 split.

"I was originally told by a few people that you shouldn't use 4H wheel settings on Dry Ground" This is valid for part-time 4wd without center diff. I know one bugger kept arguing on this on a post when I talk about the 4th gen system. LoL.

Correct, most people with 4WD don't understand this since this feature is very rare. We have AWD or 4WD with the push of a bottom.

All I get is this little box?!
I drive mine in 4HI once a month around town. Then I find a dirt road and throw her in 4LO for a little while just to keep the transfer case actuator from seizing.

I have a 2007 and 2014 4runner. My 2007 i run 4hi most the winter. Its awd. If I want true 4wd, I lock my center diff. In 4hi I can drive circles on dry pavement without any binding. Don't do that if center diff is locked. It will bind, make noises and eventually break something. My 2014 4runner is 2wd or 4wd with center diff locked. I like my 2007 4wd settings better.

I have driven 70mph plus for hours with both cars center diff locked. North dakota winters... No issues.
