Hi, I have been in the market for a 4th Gen 4runner. I live in the rust belt so finding one without rust isn't easy. I recently found one rust-free as it lived most of its life in Florida until about a year ago. Everything checks out for what features, trim, and engine I want. The only issue if the car is being sold at a discounted price because there are repairs needs to be done before it can pass a state inspection. The dealership gave me a list of required and recommended repairs...
    • wiper blades
    • battery service
    • steering gear
    • front rotors
    • hood shocks
    • alignment
    • oil leaks (dealership needed further time to figure out from where)
    • cracked left and right axle boots
I was wondering how much these repairs would cost me with a mechanic as well if they are common repairs or this is specific for this 4Runner. I also don't want to end up having problems down the road so any advice is helpful. Thanks.

Keep looking would be my advice. Sounds like that particular vehicle has problems that you dont want to pay for.(believe me)
Hertz rent a car has flooded the market with used 4 runners that are 5th generation with less than 40,000 miles and at great prices. (under $30K)
I would start searching the internet for deals. It is a great time to buy. Banks are giving out low interest loans .

I agree with Mike, start looking outside of your area if possible. Welcome to the forum.

Yeah when I saw steering gear and oil leaks I was like wtf? That things been abused. Gotta be better ones out there, unless you're very good at repairs those could end up being costly to pay someone for.

Steering gear doesn't come up often, it could be a dubious diagnosis by the dealer.

Oil leak could be valve cover, which is no big deal.

Everything else on the list is normal wear and tear and not a concern for a vehicle of this age.
