Plastic trim rubbing off paint

I didn't notice it and had to get out the roll to see what you mentioned. It looks like about a half millimeter on one edge of my roll when I peel back the paper. I hadn't peeled back the paper to see it until now. That edge just happens to be the one that I trimmed off and discarded. The other edge on my roll has adhesive all the way to the edge and that happens to be the one that I used.



In reality, it probably does not matter because tigthening the bolts causes the soft rubber to permanently conform to the garnish and it's held in place by the four bolts pinching the garnish against the tape. You could cut your strip down the center I guess. Otherwise, I'd install the edge with no adhesive so that it is facing down in relation to gravity so there would be no possibility of anything ever creeping behind it from the top down.

 

I'm getting excited to do this upgrade and will do it this weekend. Just to confirm on the 2228 tape, does it only come in one size (width) and we cut it to the correct width? I just want to be sure I buy the correct stuff.

I'm also going to copy Tooly on the removing plastic scoop before I drop-off the truck for PPF next week. One I get my Canvasback installed (just ordered), maybe I can stop being so paranoid and finally start driving the truck

So why isn't there a problem with the plastic garnishes on the doors and rear fenders? I imagine these just clip in place, and mine are pretty loose. I haven't seen any report anywhere of any issues with these pieces.

 

Before I tackle this tomorrow, 4R Florida, did you have any issue with the 4 bolts spinning while trying to remove the 10mm nuts holding the garnish to the hatch?

 

No, and I removed and replaced them more than once as I worked.

 

Update: Yesterday, I removed my hood scoop in preparation for the Front PPF install on Tuesday. I decided to hold off on the hatch/garnish fix until after the PPF is installed (mainly because I didn't want them potentially opening/closing the hatch while they have my truck and I make adjustments).

Also ordered a whole bunch of Canvasback interior protection.

Will try to get to the hatch/garnish fix next weekend.

 

I just ordered a roll of the 2228 tape but I have an insanely dumb question to ask before I begin. When reapplying the garnish do I discard the original gasket now that I am using the tape? I’m 99.9% sure that I do but I wanted to ask prior.

 

What did you end up doing, keeping the factory gasket or removing before reinstalling the handle?

 

I have the tape and my next door neighbor (who does auto trim for a living) is going to help me tackle this soon. I sent a PM to 4R Florida but haven’t heard back yet. It doesn’t make sense to me to re-use or to install a new gasket if you are using the 2228 tape but it would sure be nice to know for sure what 4R Florida did. PS: I’m glad that I’m not the only one with this question.

I haven't had the handle off yet but I'm guessing it's a factor of the factory gasket being so thin that leaving it in place really makes no difference.

 

Just completed mine, everything went smoothly. If you know what to look for, you can tell it's not factory but it's worth the piece of mind.




One thing I did differently was I used 3M vinyl tape usually used for pinstriping to get the outline of the handle. Super flexible and easy to bend around the corners.

 

I liked your idea of the 3M tape so I have that ordered. If removing my ladder ends up being required then I’m going to opt to leave well enough alone. I did the ladder install and the amount of tension at the base is pretty substantial. The top of the ladder is permanently fixed with some type of 3M adhesive tape that would be very hard to detach, remove and re-apply.

 

Anyone in the NY Tri State area have this fixed under warranty correctly? My 22 has been at the dealer on Long Island 3 times now for this issue and the paint rubbed through the 4th time now.

 

It seems after 3 visits, they're not able to do it right. You may have to address it with the fix in this thread.

 

Agreed, I dabbed some Dr Colorchip on mine and within two days it had chipped back off. I’ll wait till I get the garnish off to decide how to tackle mine but as you stated I think the best fix is the one in this thread. My current plan is to remove, clean, apply Dr ColorChip, allow it to cure for an hour, then proceed with the 2228 tape.

 

Looks good to me! Evenly applied all the way around. Nobody would ever know or care that it was DIY.

 

Do you guys not have the rubber trim backing on the rear hatch garnish piece?

when i bought my 2021 brand new, i noticed the same rubbing and took it to the dealer. They had it repainted and said my model was missing the rubber trim so they put it on there. No issues with rubbing anymore.

 

On my 2024, yes I had it. Very thin and ineffective.

 

My 2024 has it as well but does little to protect the paint.

 

Dang.. so far, mind has been okay. A little wear around the hood scoop but the tailgate is okay for now

 

The problem I see is that half of the cases seem to cause very deep chips at the garnish tips, not just rubbing. I have seen several in person at the dealership on various model years.

 

I walk by a black 2021 or newer 4R in my neighbourhood while walking my dog and can see the paint has rubbed off on the tips of the garnish. I always think I should write a little note and tuck it under a wiper telling him to take it to the dealer to get it fixed before his warranty expires.

 

Better yet, leave a note with directions to this thread.

 

Thankful for this thread and the insight from other owners. I just went to check my 22 TRD ORP in silver metallic and I’m experiencing the same paint rubbing on mine. Will be going to get it checked out at my local dealer asap.

Gotcha. The “tips” of my garnish don’t tough the paint. I can see through it and the car. Hopefully, i am good for awhile. Its been 3 years already so

 

If you read through the whole thread, you will see that a lot of them are that way. My theory is that when the hatch slams or someone pushes on it, the plastic flexes.

 

Life happened and finally getting to this… truck is turned 3400 miles and I’m anxious to get to this now.

Just ordered the 2228 Scotch tape (1inch x 10ft) and 3M pinstriping tape… I’m going to use some left over masking tape to help cut the 2228 scotch tape to the thinner 6mm width…

Going to work on fixing this next week. Maybe a slightly different approach than the 2228 tape on the body. Planning to use a rubber gasket on the inside of the garnish to "space out" the factory seal, sand the bottom corners of the garnish and use some 0.3mm stainless washers with vinyl tape on the to space the garnish out from the body a tiny bit. Also Going to paint and polish the spots where it rubbed. Will update with details if it works.

Question about removing the garnish. Is it possible to get to the little screw that holds the clip on the top section of the garnish? If so, it seems that removing that screw may be a better option to release it rather than brute forcing that clip out from the body still attached.
