    Hi All,

There is a little, black, plastic box just hanging out in my interior fuse box in my '96. Any idea what this could be? I'm hoping it's a common thing and someone can clue me in. There's a black wire exiting the top that just terminates. There's a long, narrow plug on the bottom with eight or so wires.

The car has an aftermarket radio with a backup camera and off road lights up front, but that's it for electrical mods (as far as I know).

    Thanks!

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
I believe that's the Body ECU. Reference B16, and B17, in the following pictures.

    Is that any help?

That does not look stock. Toyota would not mount it like that and I see splices.

Oh, and it's not mounted. It's just stuffed in there.

Could it be some kind of control, or power supply for the camera?
Or maybe the same thing for the radio? Some kind of junction box for either one?
Could it have been for an after market alarm system the PO put in, but then later disabled? Or just quit using?

Have you tried taking the plug off, and seeing what no longer functions? Or no longer functions correctly, or as it did before you unplugged it? That may well tell you what it's for...

Keep us up to date with what you find, please...

    It's definitely aftermarket.

    Any writing/codes/number on it?

Probably goes to the switch above it that is also not stock.

Thanks all. I'll cross my fingers and unplug the thing. I hope it's not an immobilizer that turns on once I plug it back in! It will probably be a few days, but I'll report back.

My block was a no parking zone all week and I didn't want to chance anything with the truck a block away. I just moved it back and took the plunge.

After unplugging the wee box, it started right up. The radio came on. Clock's working. When I plugged it back in, I got two beeps, kinda like the door chime, but not quite. I like the unused/unplugged anti-theft theory, but who knows. I guess it's not hurting anything and I'm not pulling everything apart to trace the wiring!

There were no markings of any kind on the outside of the box.
