Hello, i have a 1999 4Runner. It has 412000 kms, a few problems including rocker rust, valve cover leak, p0171 code for o2 sensor i believe, broken hatch and handbrake. Also some bad control arm bushings. Frame is solid though. Should i just keep it how it is for now? driving it through the winter than buying maybe a toyota pickup/tacoma, or, should i put some money into it and keep it for a while? opinions wanted, thanks!

My 97 has 310,000 miles, rocker rust, valve cover leak, handbrake not hooked up (and I have a manual 5-speed), and I just spent this year replacing the clutch, rear wheel bearings, water pump timing belt. Next year I will tackle the valve covers, e-brake and whatever front end issues I find. I hope I am buying myself another 5 years and 100,000 miles.

But I didn't have much choice, I don't have money to replace it.

The issues you have can be fixed pretty easy if you have some basic wrenching and junk yard foraging skills for <$1000.

can you find a similarly dependable truck for the same price that won’t require a similar amount of maintenance? Probably not. Ultimately, it’s up to you on how to spend your money, but your platform is a solid one as is- anything you buy would have to be because you want to spend the money, rather than a return on investment.
