It is faint in the background. As the revs go higher it increases in frequency. None of my other 3 4Runners sound like this.

    Anyone have ideas?

    Thanks!

Yes. Almost sounds like a diesel. Here is another video. I think some of the sound is getting lost on the youtube conversion... A/C is not on and there are no aftermarket parts.

I think all 5th gens do it. Something to do with the variable valve timing?

Thank you all for the responses. We have 3 other 4Runners and they dont sound like this. But from what I am hearing it is normal.

Agree with Whippersnapper - my 2023 Limited sounds the same. I also drove a 2010 Tacoma with the 4.0 1GR-FE single VVTi for almost 13 years - and it had the same "clacking" sound. It ran as good, when I gave it to my son with 145K miles on it, as it did the day I bought it.

we have a 2018 & a 2019,both sound like diesels up close. they also seem to move a lot of air. if I'm in the living room and my son cranks one of them in the garage, sounds like a hurricane

    This is normal.
    My 2013 FJC, 2014 SR5 & my 2021 TRDORP all made/make the same sound.

Mine sounds exactly like this. Brand new 2024 orp. Especially when it’s coming off throttle. I worried about it too at first. But apparently it’s a fifth gen thing and it’s normal.
