I'm hoping y'all can help me diagnose this noise my 2023 TRD OR is making when I brake from, say 30 miles per hour at a stop sign (going straight) or making a right or left hand turn. In the video linked below, the noise occurs about one to two seconds into the video. Here are a few related points:

    1) The noise sounds like a metallic scraping or rattling sort of sound (not the low-frequency tire noise or the click/thunk sound at the end of the video).

    2) I have all the skid plates removed, so it's not a skid plate rattle.

    3) The noise happens when braking in a straight line, so it does not seem to be steering-related (I realize in the video I'm making a right turn at the time it happens, but it would have done the same thing without the turn.)

    4) The noise happens during mild to moderate braking (probably at the point when the speed has slowed to about 5 or so miles/hour) and seems to coincide with the point during the braking process when the low-frequency tire noise is at or near a maximum.

    5) I can't tell while driving whether the noise originates under the vehicle or in the engine compartment.

    Any ideas are appreciated!

Hard to make out anything definitive from your video.

if you have the means, put it up on stands and look around loose components, signs of rubbing, etc.

haw many miles on the vehicle? Mods?

Sounds like an exhaust metallic sound. Check hangers and what it may be hitting against.

So more info needed. Original brakes or aftermarket? Are calipers clean?
How many miles on these pads? What is approx. pad thickness?
Could the pins holding the pads in the caliper be dirty or rusty or dry (lube gone)? Did the antisqueal shims that press the caliper piston to the pad itself get properly lubed?
Sometime pads can shift in caliper when braking and make a metallic clunk?

These are the original factory brake pads and rotors, and I haven’t re-lubed them. I was thinking that replacing the pads is probably a good thing to try.

Yep, you have the same noise (possibly louder than mine, not sure). Glad to know someone else out there has it! I also have the cali raised cat shields, so that may be the culprit?? I currently have all my skid plates off, and if I can get the time this weekend, I'll plan to take off the Cali Raised cat shields and see if the noise goes away.

Will let you know what I find.

My guess is it’s an exhaust heat shield rattling. Check the various shields. The one near the tailpipe on mine came loose and was rattling. I reinstalled it with larger washers.

    Suspension

My Tacoma started doing that after I added the roadactive suspension to the rear. Sounds exactly like that. Yes it is leaf springs but sounds the same. I hear it more on acceleration since its in the rear. So I'd guess front on yours.

Try jacking the front and back and dropping it quicker that your normally would. You should hear it.

@Dillusion Sorry if this is a dumb follow up question. What do you mean by jacking the front and back and dropping it quicker? How did you end up fixing the issue?

To tell if its the suspension get a floor jack and lift the 4R and instead of being gentle let it down with some speed. You should be able to hear the same sound if it is your suspension and tell which side.

I didn't fix it I know its coming from adding the road active helper spring. And I can only really hear it with slow acceleration. Usually the radio or engine covers it up good enough for me.

OK Thanks! I'm tracking. Do you think it's worn leaf springs? I've had 3 mechanics look at my car and cant figure it out.

In my case I'm assuming it has to do with the angle or whatever the helper spring changed.

I maxed it out so it did lift the rear a little more than an inch while unloaded. I doubt the spring is bad I only have 40k on a 2018. Its not broken for sure.

Assuming you have a 4Runner, you don't have leaf springs.

Coul be something hitting the dust shield?

Do you have a go-pro? You could mount it underneath each corner to record what's happening. Maybe you'll see something obvious.

I removed my catalyst shields in addition to the skid plates...and the rattle is still there. Planning to poke at all the heat shields next to see if I can identify the culprit.

Thanks for the update Connor. I've been poking around alot as well and I'm beginning to think it's a heat shield. I'll keep you posted and please do the same.

Hey Connor, I have another update. I dropped my car off at another mechanic. I'm heading out now to pick it up. They heard the noise and did a search under the vehicle. They told me there was nothing loose under there but they suspect it is a heat shield. The only way to figure it out would be to take off one heat shield at a time and by process of elimination try to pin point the cause. That would be a couple of hours of labor, so I told them to leave it for now. He suggested switching to all terrain tires (I have M/T) to see if that would help also. In sum they couldnt figure it out but suspect a heat shield. No progress as of yet.

Thanks for the update! I was busy with other projects this past weekend, so I didn't have a chance to poke around on all my heat shields. Still planning to do that this week or possibly over next weekend.

you know, what if it's the cat converter shields vibrating against that cross bar between the shields and the ground?

Need some help trying to diagnose. Whenever the brakes are applied at lower speeds there is a scraping noise at a single point during one wheel rotation. Sounds like its coming from the front wheels but I cant exactly pinpoint. The noise subsides after driving for a while but once the vehicle has settled/cooled for a few hours the noise will come back. Brought it to the dealer and they resurfaced the front passenger rotor but it hasn't resolved the issue. I bought it used from the dealership a month ago and the pads were serviced before being sold. Should I just replace both the front rotors or what else could be the cause of the noise ? Thanks in advance. Video link below for reference.

It could be a warped brake rotor, dust shield rubbing or a caliper sticking.
