I need to do this but have never done it. The local detailer wants $400 plus to do it. Is it that hard?

It's not hard at all, just very tedious and time consuming..
We have a Detailer Porter at my work(Airstream) and he came down to my house and showed me and my son how to do it..
He lends me his supply's cause I don't have the machine to do the sealing coat..

Every now and then when he has time, him and his wife come and they add this platinum protection to block sun damage and give a shiny look..
I will send you pictures of the product..
They even detail the leather inside for me..

Wow that's really cool of them. Yes any info and pics would help. I have a ceramic wax kit but have not used it cuz I want to clay bar it first. But as stated I have no clue what I'm doing and laziness has won out so far so I have not researched it.

Hey I'd love to see some better pics of your running boards! I need to get some. Haven't decided which ones yet.

    I'm kinda teetering between N-fab 3" or the t4r trail steps/boards.

Ok here is the products he uses, Yea they own a detail business outside of this mainly do boats.. Yes they are, they both are super nice with me..

    Directions
    1st
Wash the Car, try using a soft sponge cloth like so that you don't create scratches
    2nd
Get a spray bottle and use the orange bottle. You will mix the solution with water
Youre spray bottle should be filled with half water/ half solution
    3rd
Spary you'r solution mixture in portions of the car and start hand scrubbing it with the red clay bar to remove any gunk and sticky film.
That will be your process till you do the whole car
    4th
You will use a buffing machine, I will get pics later on that
    5th
Use that special clear coat to seal your work and protect it from the sun and harsh chemicals
I will get you of picture of that, I might be able to get you a bottle of that, I asked him already and he will see with the vendor comes inPhotoGrid_1540496994788.jpg

Ok, when I get home from work I will send you some pictures... k

The running boards came with it, the previous owner had kids so this was the best fit.. They actually do the job quite well, it adds a more softer look to the vehicle..

Nfab us a good brand, are you considering the small step up metal boards..

The detailing supplies are just Meguiars available in lots of stores. Agree with Jennifer it is a PITA to do I've never personally done it but the vehicle does look nice when it's done. At this point in life I'm in a place now where I spring for the couple hundred bucks now and then for a waxing.

I would pay as well but now since I learned, I could use the time to spend with my son plus it actually sometimes feels therapeutic.. Being outside listening to music and just enjoy the air.. And it wouldn't kill doing the work, makes me more appreciative..

My coworker mentioned out of many products hes used by far those have been the best...

I did the clay bar/wax for the first time ever on my last Tacoma- took out so much stuff stuck to the paint. Need to do it to the new runner now - it’s a several hour job but eek worth it :)

Oh yea tell me about it, it took me 3hours.. Then I started being OCD and getting underneath the fender area right above the tire.. But when its done, its so silky smooth that you can run your finger and feel the softness...
    So worth it, I agree

Looks good Jennifer!! Yes definitely the process with clay bar and then polish the works. I can easily spend a day on my vehicles. But I’m very anal when it comes to my cars. Lol. I use two different products Adams’s. But I use this a lot it is the quicker way and I think it looks just as good as Adam’s This stuff is Chadwick’s Triple play. It is pretty much polish spray use it as water less wash. But if my car is pretty dirty I still wash it first then use this stuff. Comes with a buffing block it is like using clay bar. You spray it on and wipe off.

Ok I have a question for you.
Have you ever driven her in sand?
The reason why I'm asking is I'm going on a trip soon to Pismo and I wanted to know what PSI to drop the air to, to safely drive on beach sand where I'm camping at..

And if you have, did it have any damage underneath to the engine with sand debris

Thanks!! Let me tell you with that product I mentioned the nice thing is I don’t spend a lot of time with clay barring it then going thru polishing it. I use that stuff after everytime I wash my vehicle. When you take the square block that come with it that is just like clay bar so when you use that and wipe the car off it is so slippery just like you gave it a fresh wax or polish job. I use that all the time on my Corvette. I cannot even tell the last time I washed my Vette. Now the sand part I would probably just google it and you probably will get a lot of info. You will probably laugh Jennifer I have never takin my 4Runner in the sand yet. Used it in the snow in Pa which we usually get a lot. I know friends that use to take there jeeps on the sand and they would air down there tires pretty low. But as far as the sand doing anything I think as long as you take a pressure washer to the underneath I would think it would be ok. Hopefully other guys will chime in that have done it. Hope this helps.

I don't "off road" for fun. But I do go off road to get to where I need/want to go for fun. And that involves mud, sand, etc. Blasting through terrain will spray sand and mud all over up under the vehicle into places where you'll never get it out. Will it hurt anything? Probably not.

In wetter climates, anywhere there is sand/mud retained, it provides a place for wet muck to dwell in the future (rather than water simply evaporating). As such, I don't avoid going places I wanna go. But I simply drive in a way where I try to minimize throwing sand/mud up under the vehicle.

This translates to generally just being mindful and driving kinda slowly where possible. And still doing whatever the hell I wanna do. Just my way of doing things, as I'm also a detail nut with my vehicles. I enjoy the detailing process and results.

I used to use this on the undercarriage of my FJ when going out to the beach; sand and salt. Stinks for a few days, but the protection is terrific. Provides a wax coating. Just keep it off the brakes. I sprayed the frame and most other exposed areas. mp.jpg

Hey Jennifer, i think you will be fine at 18 to 20 psi. most problems happen when stopping hard or taking off from a stop, both of these kinda make you sink in the sand, You should not have any damage from the sand debris. You can haul ass if you want, but if you try to slam on the brakes you will make it sink in. Should not be a problem for your rig though, enjoy it, become one with it. Peace.
