    Hi All!

Stoked to be a part of the community. I just got the TRD Pro 2021 LR and I’m obsessed with it.

st Pete Florida - just a little bit of rain here right now!

I had shifted it over from H2 over to L4 to try it out with all the rain but when I was trying to shift it back, I was getting a few error codes popping up and so I’m not sure what to do. Trac off, check engine and triangle with exclamation point.

Should I take it to the dealer or is this an easy fix? I just bought it on Saturday...

Looks like a great community and looking forward to interacting with everyone here soon.

You shifted into 4LO on pavement?

    2HI is for pavement.

4HI is for slippery conditions; snow, mud, ETC.

4Lo is for low speed maneuvering in low traction situations.

How fast did you go in 4LO?

Edit: you can engage 4LO and go straight and slow on pavement to test the system. You should never drive on pavement in 4HI or 4LO unless its very slippery.

Welp, I’m a dumbass then. I probably went 40 or so in 4LO which I’m guessing is very bad.. Guess I’ll take it to the dealership and see what they say?

I don’t think you did anything by driving it, it may be how you tried to shift into 4 low, did you come to a complete stop, put it in N with your foot on the brake?

Yes. Get it looked at. Hopefully it's not serious.

4LO changes the gearing in the transfer case for maximum torque. It should never be used at high speed.

As others have mentioned, if you didn't follow the procedure in the manual to engage and disengage 4LO, you might have just caused the computer to have a brain fart.

Let us know what you find out.

Gotcha, I did follow the instructions in the manual to switch it from L4 to H4 then H2.

Appreciate the guidance! Will circle back once I go there tomorrow to have it looked at

Last dumb question, should I tell the service department exactly what I did since it’s under warranty or am I backing myself in to a corner if I do that?

In the OP's defense, I think they ought to do a much better job of explaining the 4WD system when you buy them. When I bought my first one, I knew I needed to run it in 4WD once a month to "exercise" the system, but didn't know that dry pavement was a no-no. Naturally, it sounded like I threw marbles in a blender when I cranked a hard right into a dry parking space.

I was thinking of recommending this, but I didn't want to encourage it in case it would cause more trouble.

I'm not sure how long this actually takes, but it can be sped up by removing BOTH terminals and touching the cables together. This will reset the computer, deleting the codes. It they come back, then there is actually a problem.

I learned this when my '03 went into limp mode after hitting a deep slush puddle too fast.

Exactly right. Shouldn't cause any trouble just reset all modules. Touch both terminal is a good recommendation too.

Why is that the dealership’s responsibility?
When you buy a sports car, do they make you go drive a track to learn how to handle the power?

Alrighty, so GREAT news to report and lesson learned to not make that mistake again.

I took it to the dealership and they said one of the speed sensors was off, so when I shifted it, it produced those errors codes because of it.

Everything is all good and no issues with the car as a result. Needless to say, she’s staying in H2 until further notice :p

Thanks for all the sound advice and the well deserved roasting!

Aren't salesman suppose to show you features? so they show you how nice the engine, radio buttons, and no time to show you how to engaged 4Hi, 4Lo, 2L. NOT EVERYONE driving manual 4WD. There are females buying 4runner, now they expect everyone knows how to engage manual 4WD. Don't' Sellman ask you first: hey, what do you use this for? towing, trailing ect? They can go on about how powerful these rigs can do but not once talk about how they work and expect all customers know what to do with it. They would walk thru the whole car show you everything except that. Yes sure this is almost the most important break down in powertrain and yes salesman does not suppose to tell their product capable of doing.

"When you buy a sports car, do they make you go drive a track to learn how to handle the power " <<not even correlation. SO buying OFF-ROAD, you suppose to go to trails and test drive -now engage all you want with it. Then come back, hey your transmission is F___. I am buying Subaru now.

Biggest problem is the sales people don’t usually know how the 4wd system works.

Unless it’s a veteran sales person who actually gives a shit, a car sales person is usually shit.
