Picked up my new runner 09/24/2021.
“21”ORP Barcelona red. Was able to negotiate a good deal, no dealer markups, or add ons.
However they did add a rockledge alarm system at port. Told them I would not pay for any add ons. So was not charged.
However unit is still in vehicle. Would like to know how to strip it out.

Is it the standard alarm that comes from most dealerships?? Just leave it in. It’s a simple chip for add on. I had an old neighbor add it on to my truck for free. It’s not hurting anything

I’m afraid that something stupid may happen, and it will immobilize my vehicle. When I was leaving the dealer with the vehicle it would not start. Salesman had to enter a code with his transponder. To override the system.

I ran it without it for 3 years. Zero issues. I was cleaning the truck (when I had my Tacoma) and he goes, “you want me to activate that?” I offered him money and he just added the chip and programmed it. You never know who you might meet. I’ve gotten a ton of stuff for cars for free just by treating people with respect and being friendly. Biggest thing I try to teach my kids. And I obviously return the favor when I can

That's the standard Toyota Anti-Theft system dealers use. They're supposed to remove it...at least that's what I was told. It's not supposed to be passed on to the consumer. It's meant to stop people from taking off to another state on a test drive.

As another member said, I'd leave it. It's probably got a starter interrupter in it, which is nice.

That is my concern. I know it has start interrupt. What if this thing goes goofy, and opens the circuit fir starter. It was the add on alarm these dealers are trying to sell for $895. They agreed not to charge for it but didn’t remove it. Electronics go goofy

And there in is the problem, I don’t have communication with this system. No remotes. If it takes a crap and opens up my ignition system I’m stranded, and or lock unlock problems. Alarm problems.

In 2018 the OEM “anti-theft system with engine immobilizer” was a standard feature on all models. I presume it’s the same with more recent model years. Why would you need or want an additional system on top of that?

Exactly, but these dealerships are adding this crap, and trying to sell as an upgraded security system. At high mark up prices.
I think they are being installed at the ports, and hit the dealers already installed. Then they say you have to pay for it. All BS
My understanding also is that one of the large dealers owns Rockledge.

from reading the thread, it seems the real question is, did the dealership/port actually install anything "new", or did they just try to get you to pay extra for something that the factory installed or is normal equipment for all 4runners?

No it is an install led module mounted on knee bolster with wire harness going up into vehicle wiring, plus rockledge window sticker. So yes there is a physical add on

Thanks for the clarification, I started out thinking it was an add on, but was slowly being convinced it was factory.

I’d be on the dealership to remove it, if you use the included in the price, I mean free service visits, schedule it then. Then it’s Toyota to blame if shit goes wrong.

Here’s a good explanation of these dealer add-on alarms:

    https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2016/08/never-buy-car-alarm-dealership/

“These alarms actually start out as key management utilities for dealers, who later turn them into alarms if they are able to stiff the customer. Dealers that install these devices often use them on every vehicle that comes on the lot, since they are programmable to a master fob by inserting a compatible module in the alarm control unit. Once they are programmed to the master fob, any salesman or manager can open the car with their fob, which makes it easier for them to show the car to customers.”

This is a perfect example of Southeast Toyota trash.

I have no idea what it does, except when you push the button it lights up.

It also appears to have been somehow wired into irritatingly blasting the horn every time you locked and unlocked the truck, at some point it stopped doing that and I’m not exactly sure why or how it happened.

All I know is the vehicle was a trade from a shady dealership in Hollywood Florida to an equally shady dealership in St. Augustine.

They tried to sell me the OEM Toyota floor mats for $500 as part of the “professional protection package” and they were about to install pinstripes before I got it away from them.

This is the only thing they couldn’t remove because both dealers claimed they didn’t install it and say it may have been thrown on there at Jacksonville port?

That sounds like an interesting electronic project to search and destroy.

It reminds me of what was installed on my 2000 4R. A “Karr” system that actually worked OK for 18 years. I never used that button but it could get the alarm into Valet mode, and disable the alarm if you inadvertently set it off. I forget the specifics and don’t have the instructions anymore but maybe a google search has it.

    Seriously?

A plane ticket to a reputable dealer is a better option.

Pinstripes, lots of em. Plus a couple dents.
If the dealer wont remove it, I'd call a local car alarm / window tint company and ask them how much they will charge to remove it.
Get some window tint while your there as well.
