New owner, is this normal engine sound?

Hello I just purchased a 2017 TRD ORP with 50k miles. The engine makes a pretty distinct knocking/clacking sound right by the driver side fender well. This is after about 10 mile drive, I feel like it’s even louder when cold. Is this normal? Thanks for all help.

Yes. These engines are not quiet. It's due to the shim under bucket valvetrain.

Also yes it will make a pump noise at startup and shutdown and a buzz from the fuel tank after sitting for a few hours.

Sounds good to me. The engine is early 2000s technology in all its glory (a good thing). Enjoy it!

Yep. It'll rattle and shake like that for the next couple hundred thousand miles (at least).

Welcome to the forum. I assure you, there are plenty of new owners who have asked the same thing, and a good portion of those didn't get any particularly good deal, some got taken to the cleaners to get the same engine sound.

Also one last thing to note, the clacking sound is a lot more prominent when the transmission is in Park compared to Drive. Thanks again

Yes, because the engine idles at a higher rpm in Park with no load on it (vs. churning the torque converter in Drive). You may get skid plate and/or interior panel rattles in one transmission setting vs. other setting.

    Also normal.

A noise from the brake pedal area when first driving off is also normal.

I knew it was roller rocker, but thought the shim was still in place. I wonder why they’re so damn loud?

In park or neutral the engine has no resistance from the torque converter so the rpm rises a bit.

Yeah, I thought I bought a diesel when I got my first 4Runner. Now my son and I both have one..another thing I noticed is these things move a ton of air. in the garage especially, sounds like a tornado . a diesel tornado.

Welcome, Do you have a maintenance history? Maybe no fluids or lubes serviced yet other than engine oil?
I suggest considering Tranny, Transfer case (there are a few GL-4 suitable gear lubes), both diffs and all 6 propeller shaft grease zerks (technique required).
I got my daughter a 2019 SR5 with 50,000 miles and all above lubes were due as all were original.
If the technician changing your lubes can evaluate for simple age and not being discolored or burnt you will have peace of mind.

hi this is a local single owner vehicle that was serviced at the Toyota dealership its whole life. I got the records from the Toyota website and all the previous owner did was oil changes every 5-10k miles.also got new tires and a battery a few years ago.

I just got the truck on Friday but so far I’ve done the differentials, transmission drain and fill, engine/cabin air filters and greased the driveshaft. My $130 per liter transfer case oil should arrive today so I’ll do the transfer case tonight.

this weekend I’m going to do a coolant, brake fluid and power steering fluid flush.
