    Hey there, just bought a 1992 Toyota 4Runner.
    315km on body
    165km on new engine
    10km on new tranny and clutch
    (Apparently, no receipts were provided...)

    The owner I bought it from didn’t have a lot of info but the owner before her clearly put in a lot of work, aftermarket stereo, new paint job, no rust on frame

    1.speedo/odometer aren’t working
    2.back passenger (driver side) window isn’t working
    3. Rear window won’t operate well unless vehicle is running. Only works with console operation
    4. Ebrake doesn’t work
    5. Headlights dimming over bumps (probably a ground wire)
    6. Some rust on rocker panel
    7. Cat converter is gone

    I did the front brakes(calipers, rotors, pads), new shocks and added a resonator to the exhaust system.


    Any new owner maintenance suggestions would be greatly appreciated! This is my first 4Runner can’t wait to get it into tip top shape and hopefully keep it running for a long time yet!

    Welcome, I hope you got that cheap. I would replace front and rear diff fluids and do a flush on the radiator.

    3inch lift.
    I have a 1994 4Runner I’ve done a lot of work on. I’ll tell you what I done to mine and if you haven’t done these things to yours I would definitely recommend.
    Remove exhaust crossover pipe that goes from one side of engine to the other on the back of the engine your head gaskets will thank you. That is if it is the 3.0 v6 engine which I’m guessing it is.
    You can buy headers and complete exhaust kit for pretty cheap. Or you can get cheap headers from eBay they work just as good as far as I’ve heard. They even sale a block off kit for the stock manifolds.
    Definitely upgrade coolant system buy new upgraded radiator even if the one you have looks good and replace all coolant hoses thermostat and all. That’s something that I think is very important if it is the 3.0 v6 engine. Just my opinion.
    Like trlhiker said drain and replace differential fluid front and rear. Use Toyota specified weight gear oil.
    change engine oil and filter.
    Drain and replace trans fluid do not flush if it’s an automatic just drain and replace.

    Remove EGR system completely. If you don’t have inspections where you live. You can get the kit to do it with online. I got mine from yotashop.com it was $19.99

    It’s okay that the cat is gone mine hasn’t had one in years lol and it runs perfect.

    Hey thank you so much for this info, I do have the 3.0, and would like to protect the head gasket. Do you buy the Toyota made gear oil in the can? Do you have a radiator that you recommend? What type of headers did you put in? I’m doing some research but maybe you could clarify, does adding the headers delete the crossover, depending on which style of headers? Still learning :)

    upgraded suspension, large all terrain tires
    roll up your sleeves, and have a go at her....she'll thank you later..with miles!....besides swapping out radiator, and flushing fluids, focus on underneath..and frame...keep your eye out for rust...and take care of any that pops up......btw, welcome to the forum...

    Yes adding the headers deletes the crossover. I have ebay headers on mine They’re about $160 and they have held up great no issues at all. And as far as a radiator I got the champion all aluminum 2 row radiator it’s around 200 bucks or so and it’s definitely worth every penny. And for the gear oil I use is Redline 75w90.
