I'm a new member and have a 4Runner that's has been delivered to the dock in Portland Oregon between 5-12-22 to 5-14-22 and I am being told it should make it to Boise by late June.
I have one question about the hood scoop and sun glare that I have been reading about. If long term owners could chime in I would be grateful if this is something I should plan on fixing with the decal right away or is it something that really doesn't happen that much. I did trade is a 2016 Silverado that had a chrome badge on the steering wheel that would shine in my eyes and really bug me. We will be taking a long trip in late July and would like to fix it if the group thinks it should be done. Thanks for any response.

I own a silver with the scoop and it definitely can be glaring in your eyes depending on the time of day.

I've had my Off Road going on 3 years, and it's been an issue from time to time. I finally decided to get the decal and address the issue recently. If the glare off the steering wheel of your Silverado bugged you, I'd order a decal, you will want it.

It was bad enough that I started making them haha! It just depends on the angle you are driving toward the sun etc.

In this thread people will tell you it’s not a problem or it is a problem.

I’ve had mine for nine years and it’s rarely a problem, but when you find the right angle, the sun goes straight to the back of your brain.

I've had mine just over a year and I can only think of 1-2 times it was an issue. Even then, more of a nuisance than a legit problem.

I couldn't commute without issue because one stretch on my commute was just at the right time aligned with the sun and stuck in traffic. The one that broke us was a trip we were driving directly at the sun for 2-3 hours at the perfect angle and my wife said that was it. I made ours the next week haha

I think this is the big issue. A frequent commute into the sun.

Exactly. I made the glare deflector for ours and started offering them here and on Etsy to help others out and made a small "Jobby" out of it.
It totally depends on the situation/routine you have. Haha.

I have a silver TRD Off road coming. My work commute will not be a problem because work is only 7 minutes away and is early in the morning. I'm just worried about the family vacation we take to Utah and Nevada every summer. That trip is close to 1500+ round trip miles and the Silverado steering wheel I talked about in the post had to be blacked out after that first trip. Thanks for all the advice everyone!

Oh you'll get glare for sure on that trip. I drove to Denver and back last year and it certainly was a challenge. I really need to put the black matte decal over it one of these days.

when its annoying its REALLY annoying. its a cheap and easy mod, may as well do it that way you wont have to worry about it later.

congrats on the ride and welcome!

I've got a '17 ORP that is grey. I can't say that I've ever had the dreaded hood scoop glare. It may be the way I sit since I'm 6'4". Any glare, I guess, hasn't been enough to bother me. When I was working, I drove into the sun rise every morning (at least in spring & summer). All I can say is that - see if it bothers you - and if it does, get the anti-glare sticky. You can always add it.

I have a silver 18 ORP and didn’t want a dark black scoop. So I had an auto tint/vinyl shop wrap mine in a light gray matte vinyl. They also removed the scoop in the process to fold the vinyl under leading edge. Nice and clean.

Welcome from Arizona! We get some sun here and it can be an issue but never enough to cause me a problem.

It’s only a problem when you’re driving toward the sun. But if it’s part of your daily commute it’s a big deal. I notice it during my UT-AZ excursions where I drive 45 miles eastward in the morning then 45 miles westward in the evening.

More flashy annoyances are the chrome steering wheel logo, the passenger chrome door handle, even the little chrome pieces on the air vent deflectors. I covered all of them up.

Just an idea but recently had Xpel clear film put on my Silver ORP (2021). I had it put on the full hood, front bumper, grill and mirrors. I have had mine out a lot in the sun the last few weeks and no more issue with glare.

So if you want something that cosmetically does not change the look of the vehicle and cuts the glare and protects the hood maybe consider the Xpel film. So far I am very pleased with it.

I just got the clear Xpel (not stealth). I have seen a few silver with the stealth but it was not for me.

In addition the stealth would really require a full body application.

I paid $1,300 for full hood, grill, front bumper and mirrors. I would imagine it’s 5-6k for full body.

It really depends on the day, direction of travel relative to the sun, etc. I've noticed the glare as well but I think it's totally overblown by other hood bulge equipped 4Runner owners. Don't overthink this and enjoy that awesome rig coming your way.

I agree don’t overthink it. The glare was very minor in my opinion.

Enjoy the hood scoop it looks macho and this world could use some more macho.

I wouldn't mind the glare once in a while if the hoodscoop was real. It's fake so that would especially piss me off. Not sure what Toyo was thinking on that deal...

The truck looks great with the scoop. A real scoop feeds something under the hood and it would be an entry point to dust, water, etc. On a vehicle like the 4R that is likely to be used as a proper off roader this is an issue. I don't favor fake vents and scoops either but I can understand why they did it. I love how it looks.
