Looks like we'll find out on Thursday whether they nailed it, or wimped out like usual. I think a hot-hatch Corolla would sell pretty good, if they keep the price reasonable. My brother's '87 FX16 was one of my favorite vehicles I've ever driven. Hopefully they can do it justice!

I am looking forward to finding out.

    Ugh.

Were they confused because people were actually excited about one of their products??

The level of excitement for whatever they're about to reveal can probably be exemplified by the lack of interest in this thread.

Probably because Toyota doesn’t actually know what we want.

For example the supra, most people don’t even know Toyota makes it.

There’s apparently a new 86, I didn’t even know they were still making it.

Toyota debuted the new Sequoia, everybody was hoping it was the land cruiser.

I’ve never seen a company so tragically out of touch with its consumer base.

    They don't! It's 90% BMW! :D

I think the '86 is a very good looking car. I'm not a huge fan of the flat 4, but ot seems like it could be a ton of fun with some boost.

In some ways I agree. I'm very curious what they're going to do with the next gen 4runner. And, looking forward to finding out what we're actually getting here for a so-called hot -hatch.

agree with most of what landcruiser said, except maybe the "knowing their consumer base" part. with their sales volume i gotta think they know consumers quite well, or at least the general marketplace. it just doesn't translate well into the wants of more serious auto enthusiasts. but for the plebian masses? they can sell just about anything they slap their badge on to.

If they can clap together some Subaru and BMW parts nobody wants and then drag those models along with abysmal sales figures, they can surely come up with some enthusiast off-road vehicles that they claim would never sell, despite the success of the FJ cruiser.

I genuinely think corporate Toyota in the US hates the off-road market. That is the only explanation.

They hate that the 4Runner and Tacoma sell, they hate that even the four-cylinder Tacoma with a dog of an engine is successful. They look for any excuse to cancel a model.

This was an all wheel drive rally car with a ridiculous amount of horsepower and a manual transmission.

This is what I was thinking. They may be out of touch with the enthusiast community, but they know how to sell vehicles.

i wouldn't consider the FJ Cruiser successful, except maybe the first few years. beyond that it was a dog. same thing happens with a lot of enthusiast models. once initial demand dries up they die on the vine.

i think it shares similarities with the mindset on manual transmissions. enthusiasts hoot and holler that we need them, and then aside from a few really niche models (GTI and a few other German cars) they don't sell. then they get dropped.

enthusiast minorities are often vocal and loud, but they pale in comparison to larger demographics and they're purchasing power is mostly muted.

The FJ cruiser is selling for as much as new 4Runners right now.

it has outsold the supra which Toyota continues to insist on making.

if this is to be trusted, the volume doesn't support keeping the model alive. even if a lot of its expenses were paid for by the success of similar models (ala 4Runner)

The sales figures dropped off because they introduced a new 4Runner in 2010 which had a Trail Edition.

Meanwhile, the FJ cruiser which is essentially a short 4Runner got no significant updates.

They discontinued it in 2013, the sales figures beyond that are for markets in the Middle East where coked up princes like to jump vehicles on dunes and drive them on two wheels.

    yeah, i get all that.

when they first released it i wanted one. then i checked it out in person and changed my mind. weird mini-rear doors were a major turnoff, and it just felt/looked too much like a Tonka toy. Kept my 3rd Gen 4Runner for many more years.

I would also like to point out that in typical Toyota fashion, they kept jacking up the price of the FJ cruiser towards the end of its model run where it cost just as much as a new 5th Gen 4Runner.

When I bought my first FJC, I literally paid less than $27,000 out the door in 2007, by 2013, some special edition models were tickling $40,000.

Meanwhile I got my 2013 trail edition for 37.9.

back to the yaris- i hope they bring the hot hatch over. even if i never buy it cuz its just too small for my lifestyle. so i won't be surprised to be let down by all the initial hype.
