New 650# Spring Option

New release from Apache Offroad. 650lb spring with 395mm free height. The CF220.

If you're running Dobinsons extended travel IMS/MRR front shocks with 200-250 lbs of front weight added these could be the sweet spot...

Historically, Dobinson's has only offered a 590lb spring or a 730lb spring. With a lightweight bumper and winch combo the 590lb works well. But once you add preload to get more than 2.5" of lift you'll run into coil binding issues. So many rigs end up running the 730lb spring in order to get that 3.0-3.5" without having to add a bunch of preload. This works, but rides pretty stiff.

I've been on Dobinsons C59-352 front springs since I switched to Dobinsons. These are a 730lb spring with 385mm of free height. I have about 200lbs of front weight added. On the street they're a little stiff, but very controlled and manageable. Off road is really where I felt over-sprung. Alas, I had my 3" of lift, so I decided to live with it.

Once I saw this spring option I went ahead and placed an order.. Excited to try them out! Should be able to get that 3.0-3.5" of lift height without running into spring bind issues or feeling over sprung. Very glad there is a new high quality spring option for the market.

I wonder who is actually making these. I have Eibach 650s on the front. They make springs for a lot of companies that are often relabeled (like Icon). If they're relabeled Eibachs, those are good springs.

 

Just received them. They say "Made in Australia."
Could be a clue as to who is actually manufacturing them.

I've heard that Apache's springs are as good as Dobinsons... I guess I'll find out and report back

 

Got the coils installed. The ride is much softer. Once I get a good picture of the rig’s stance I’ll add it here!

As @Kyblack76 suggested, I will be doing some wheeling soon and post my findings in my build/ adventures thread.

So far I’m liking these springs. They ride nicely on the street. Just curious how they handle rough roads and rock gardens now!

 

For the record here are my results with 200 pounds of front weight. (Only counting: Low pro bumper, winch, front skid)

3.4" front lift with the following preload:

Dobinsons recommended 8.9" on the passenger side.
9.2" on the driver side to account for lean.

I believe with the IMS extended travel shocks you have the option to back the preload down to Dobinsons approved 8.4"
This would reduce lift height by about an inch.
