I took my 2001 Tundra to an oil change place one time, many many years ago and when they were done, I checked the fluid level before I drove off; they only put 5 quarts in. Just like the 4Runner, my Tundra holds 6.6 quarts. I go through the trouble of doing it myself because I want to be confident it's done correctly.

I like that, but I'm not sure it will work with my setup. I have an access panel through my skid plate, and I can't remember if I have enough room to do it that way. I'll figure it out next time, thanks!

And in the meantime, oil is spilling all over your hand! :bananadance:

No thanks. A bad idea is a bad idea be it from Toyota or Ford or Ram. You can grow to like anything if you rationalize it hard enough.

The fact that Toyota moved away from it on the 6th gen on a vehicle that supposedly is more earth friendly tells us all we need to know that it was a dud.

Another thing I've grown to appreciate about the cartridge filter is better QC. Nothing changes except the filter media -- the perforated inner core, bypass, everything stays the same. There's no mystery hiding inside a sealed metal housing, O.E. or aftermarket, manufactured by people on a morning after their favorite sports team lost the championship.

That’s perfect. Now all you need is to stick a ratchet extension in the plug and take the whole filter off each time.

Why would you need more room?

Try putting a 1 gallon zip lock around the filter housing after its loose, remove the filter and the bag catches the oil that spills out. This eliminates one step and the need for fancy drain valves. No need to drain the filter.

I saw those online, and got one thinking it would help with my 2003 Tacoma oil change, but it's so simple on the Taco, no need for if. I plan to see if it will help on the next 4R oil change.

AMEN to that. You're spot on about doing it right. Took my 4R in for the first (and last) free oil change at the dealership. I put a piece of tape on the filter housing saying "return to owner". They never changed the filter because they would have to drop the skid plate. I do it myself because i want it done perfectly and with quality products.

I think the filter housing is slightly forward of the access hole in my skid plate, so the oil will drain onto the skid plate, and not in my drain pan. Which would make an even bigger mess.

I am looking into skid plates and that is a concern of mine. What type do you have if you don’t mind me asking. New to the forum so hopefully I can get back to your reply.

Not the OP, but I believe he mentioned having a steel RCI in another thread.
