RAV4 TRD did not do well on Driving Sports TV Test. So my bet on Subaru Outback Wilderness. (Wilderness seem to have better CVT tuning over others)

Honda Passport Trail seems to be a very good competitor but according to Alex on Autos Honda reliability seems to be little down.

On paper, the new all-wheel drive system on the RAV4 is supposed to be better than Subaru's all-wheel-drive.

Toyota and Subaru are asking for so much money for their ",off-road capable" crossovers, that for afew grand more you can get a 4Runner.

But I guess I can't blame people for not buying the 4Runner and going for these crossovers. Given these gas prices, 4Runners gas mileage is pretty scary

Yeah, that's what I always think when I see them off-roading. There are a number of people that have built up RAV4s for off-roading, and while they look kind of cool, for that money, you're in a 4Runner. I don't really see the point.

On the other hand, if you know you're only going to be on mild trails, and spend most of your time on pavement, it does kind of make sense. Have you ever seen JonDZ Adventures on YouTube? He has a lifted Honda Passport. It surprisingly capable, though he readily admits it's not as capable as something like a 4Runner or FJ. He's said he previously drove a built FJ, but prefers the street manners and gas mileage of the Passport.

He did one video though, it was him, some Subaru's, and there was a 4Runner there. One Outback struggled and struggled on a hill climb, ended up basically ripping his front bumper off, and then the 4Runner just came up behind him and just rolled right up it like nothing. It's all about the right tool for the job.

As far as the most capable, I think it may be the Jeep Cherokee. I think it's kind of dumb looking, and it's been out for a while so it's fairly old, but if I remember correctly it has a true locking rear differential, and a low range mode transfer case. I think the Renegade is fairly capable as well.

On the other side other than my 4Runner buddies there are other family friends who hates 4Runner for its poor acceleration, bad mpg, less interior space, lack of handling compare to a crossover vehicle. One guy loves his Subaru Ascent. He leased to try and he is more likes to buy the new Ascent since he is happy with his old leased vehicle.

I get that. I'll never drive a Subaru until they get rid of the CVT, but for what I do with my 4R 99.9% of the time an Outback or something like a Highlander would be better.

I just like the ruggedness of the 4Runner. Even when I don't wheel, I'm kind of wheeling. I drive over curbs all the time with it and the roads here have potholes that will swallow a passenger car. I just like the peace of mind knowing that while I don't typically hit challenging off-road obstacles, if I want to I CAN.

This isn't the link to that exact video, but here's a recent one he did. That's pretty interesting. He compares the performance of different 4WD and AWD vehicles on the same obstacle.

I forget the exact one he had with the 4Runner, if I remember I'll post it and tag you in it.

I'd think the Jeep Grand Cherokee would be up there. If Jeep is going to make crossovers, I'd hope they'd be near the top.

I once saw something I couldn't believe. I was on a road trip in Idaho, and somewhere on the interstate it was super quite. I saw a Tacoma that went over the obstacle between the two directions and then made a u-turn and drove in other direction. I guess he had missed the exit. I don't think even state troopers in emergency do that lol. I saw such a thing in the city once too. The guy went over the sidewalk and made a u-turn. Both drivers got away with some really serious recklessness. I wonder what kind of citations are there for that kind of action.
These Tacomas and 4Runners are made for rough places, here in America we drive them on paved roads lol

I think jeep has a smaller crossover that has a 4Lo even. I can't recall the name, it's the size of a RAV4

There's the Compass and the KL Cherokee. (not Grand Cherokee). I don't think the Grand Cherokee is considered a crossover, because it's platform is RWD based and not shared with a car or minivan. Some would, because it is a unibody, so I guess it's a gray area with this one.

I found this KL Cherokee video, turns out these things appear to be pretty capable! This channel has a few more videos with these things in it, I may just check them out later.

Same! Meanwhile, I'm in Rhode Island where we get excited about being able to drive on dirt roads.

I always laugh when I remember that incident, where a plumbers Ford F-250 ended up in Syria with machine guns mounted on it. The Texan plumber sued the dealership because his plumbing company name was on the truck :D

One thing I know for a fact though, Subarus and the new RAV4 kick ass in the snow. They are unstoppable in the cities where it snows.
