    Greetings,

Going to bore you with too much detail, but here goes:

First time post, new to the forum. Have had this 4Runner since Sept. of '17, but had handed it off to my son in Austin about a year after I got it. He drove it sparingly for a couple years and took good care of it until recently when he was about to be a dad for the first time and decided this wasn't the hooptie for them. He was going to sell it, but I swooped in.

So, I am the 4th and 6th owner of this very original 1999 4X 4Runner. The hook for me is that it has a manual transmission, or as my coworkers call it: 'the millennial anti-theft device'.

I bought it off craigslist from a guy in Dallas. Came with every invoice back to its’ first service in Seattle, then it went to the Bay Area for few years and then to Dallas.

Had 244k on it when I got it, just turned over 261k. Had the rear end rebuilt just after I got it. The previous owner had cut out the driver’s side carpet because of an undiagnosed leak from the sunroof. I got it, applied a thin bead of silicone to the expansion seam on the sunroof seal, bought a used carpet set on eBay from someone parting out a limited and boom; good to go. New battery, alternator, oil pan gasket, front brakes and got rid of the aftermarket radio and found an OEM used stereo on eBay (see a pattern). Also found a matching cargo cover on there.

So, pretty much good to go. Nice overall patina. Silver out with tan cloth in.

My wife HATES this vehicle. We have been a Toyota family for years and jumped up to a couple Lexus a while back, but this is something I always loved. The Gen 3 4Runners are just one of the best looking SUVs ever, always wanted one just like this. Just sold my ES350 because this is my ride. People think I am crazy…….

Far from perfect, still chasing a couple leaks, the trans/clutch makes all kinds of interesting sounds when trying to upshift, rides like a buckboard and gets horrendous mileage, and NOTHING works on the tailgate (wiper, defrost, window up/down) but I just love this thing. Makes me happy every time I drive it.

    Thanks for listening. VR

Welcome, VR! You sound like the type of person I want to buy my FJ-40 when it's time to sell!
