So I'm looking to get a 4runner to build it up and get into off roading. I'm not looking to do anything extreme, not right off the bat anyways. Was thinking of getting an older one, something from the 90s. What are some things I need to look out for with the older ones that came on some models but not others, or things that commonly go wrong with the vehicles that need to be fixed? Are there any special trim levels the trucks came with that would be better than other trims?

Sorry if this question has been asked a lot. Just trying to gather as much info as I can. Not looking for info on how to outfit the thing yet, just trying to figure out which year/model/trim I should chase after.

Others will have to speak to the specifics of trims and common issues but I know one thing all used 4runners should be checked for... rust. Make sure to check underneath (frame mostly but other components as well), especially if it comes from an area where they get a lot of road salt for snow.

Seems like rust is the Achilles heel of the 4Runner

I know that there’s a Stickied thread on this forum that lists all of the generations of 4Runners, along with what years they were made, the differences between the generations, the pro and cons as well as various issues to look out for when buying them etc, but darned if I can’t find that thread now :notsure:
I just spent 15 minutes looking for it to link it for you but no luck. Try the search bar in the meantime and hopefully another member will find you the link.

I tried doing a couple of searches before posting, wanting to make sure I'm not posting something that had already been asked. Didn't really find anything useful though. I appreciate the effort though, that thread would have been really helpful. I'll do a bit more searching and see if I find anything.

It’s because it’s a loaded question and one you will get numerous opinions about.

Are you going for early 90s due to budget? Body style? Cool retro/vintage factor? Be prepared you can find them but you will be limited. Then factor in aftermarket support (parts availability). Also consider the older the vehicle the potential for spending my money on the normal wear and tear/gen maintenance items that may have been neglected. I’m not saying this to deter you, but they are factors to consider when looking at specific used vehicles.

rust issues are a major issue for any vehicle.

My personal opinion is I would look for a good 3rd gen (stay with 1999-01) or an early 5th gen (2010-2013 have the more squared nose and 2014-15 have the current look). As long as it’s 4x4 equipped.

I would tell you to figure out what you want to go with it as well.

You said light of roading/mods, so I would see what mods are out there for you before you settle on a model to hunt.

You may find a perfect vehicle in a specific search and then not find the parts you specifically want to add to it or they are pricey due to limited availability.

    good luck with your search.

oh and I have an 02 is300 as my daily, 234k on the odo. Had it since 2017. Be patient if you chose an older vehicle and make sure to walk over every inch of it from top to bottom. It’s ok to walk away.
