    Hey everyone,

I’m in the market for a 5th gen 4Runner (2014+), and I came across a 2016 SR5 4x4 in Virginia with 135k miles, 3 owners, and no accidents, listed at $19k. The first owner was a commercial owner for about a year, and it looks like the most recent owner applied rust proofing during the winters based on the Carfax.

Does this seem like a solid deal to you all, or are the commercial use and multiple owners something to be concerned about?

    Appreciate any input — thanks!

If no rust looks like its fair for everyone.

It wouldn't last long here on the market. Everyone tries to list wayyyyy over kbb but the few that get posted within reason are gone in a day or two.

You still have to get under the car and inspect the frame for rust.

Welcome. The northerner guys can comment on those few rust spots. But price is good for my neck of the woods.

I want to say no. That's not just a VA truck, that's a northern truck too. Got any pictures of the brake calipers or lower control arms or rear when opened? How long has this truck been sitting at this dealer? I think you can find a better truck for a little bit more money and no rust. Don't be afraid to fly out of state to get a better deal.

Have you ran the VIN through the Toyota Owners APP? You MUST do that before buying!!!! Create an account, add the vin to your "garage" then wait and look up maintenance history. If it doesn't have good oil changes or service - its a hard pass.

Open the back hatch and see if those rear bolts are rusted

Yeah, looks like it spent most of its life in NY. Going to check it out tmr to get a better look at the suspension components and calipers. Trucks been for sale for 120 days according to Cargurus listing.

Definitely going to run the VIN through the Toyota owners app.

Thanks for that tip and your input!

    Oooh look, another mod.....
A New York truck with that kind of rust? That'd be a pass for me. I be there are other hidden rusty spots in areas that you don't want to see rust. Start shopping for other 4Runners. If you can swing it, buy one from the South/South Western states. A place that doesn't salt the roads, so the rust will be practically non-existant.

Pictures look clean, that rust is minor. Also check toward the front of the car.

People complaining about this level of rust on 2016 have unrealistic expectations for NY truck. If you want pristine frame, then buy an Arizona car (but then you have clear coat burn-off and hard rubber seals to deal with).

Our runners have box frames, so their inside can have worse rust? If you want to keep this truck for long time I would pass on it at any price deal.
    Look for a 4runner from a non-rust belt area.

We Fluid Filmed ours from new (2020) it looks better than that, we live in Wisconsin where sometimes there's more salt on the road than snow, but, if it wasn't rust proofed by the 1st owner, it still doesn't look bad. Could the frame look better? Ya. The commercial owner probably took it to a garage for maintenance which means they, more than likely didn't hurry through maintenance. Get it, if you don't like it, get rid of it.

I'm in Michigan in a rural area where no salt is used and my 4R is garaged. You don't have to shop in Arizona to find vehicles without rust concerns.

Being in Michigan, I'd say you are in the minority if they don't use salt on the roads. My money's on most 4Runners for sale (everywhere) are from people who bought or leased new, drove them for 2 - 3 years, then traded them in. Most likely with absolutely no concern for rust or any rust mitigation, or whether the roads were salted or not.
