Hi everyone. I'm about to install the OEM roof rails onto my truck after I remove what's on there now. I'm looking for the installation instructions PDF from Toyota; basically the file that is in this link below, but for the non-Pro rails:

    https://www.4runners.com/attachments/my19-4runner-trd-pro-roof-rack-ppo-issb-pdf.36605/

I *swear* I had that PDF file on my computer, but I cannot find it. I've been searching forums, Google, etc., but I've had no luck. Can anyone help? I think I know the right torque to use, etc., but I just would really like to have this file. Thanks very much in advance!

just make sure that you loosen all the bolts little at the time DO NOT lossen one all the way or you will lose the bracket inside the head liner good luck and torque to 14lb.

Thanks for the tip. While reading a bunch of threads, I saw that in various posts as well, and this is very good advice. I would have made that mistake, I'm sure. I also wouldn't have known about the foam washers, so good thing I looked into it!

The document you attached is the same one I have in my original post. :) Any chance you have the same one for the non-Pro rack? I'm pretty sure I have the right torque values, but I'd be happier if I had the actual document for bolts that are important in keeping the truck waterproof. :) Thanks!

I’m not trying to be an ass, but you are overthinking things.

Hand tight is sufficient my friend.

I agree. It’s not hard. It’s nerve racking. I removed my Pro rack. Added my black rails. Just tighten them that was it. Now I’m getting ready to remove them and add the roof rack delete.

Every bolt has a torque spec, esp ones that compress foam washers a set amount. The 31 Nm I've found is pretty light, which also means it's easy to over-tighten them, an error just as bad as under-tightening them. I'd rather not turn my truck into a swamp like other 4R's I've seen that didn't do the rack install correctly.

If your installing the oem rack with rails coverr, It only issues single rubber washers since it has covers. Just make sure to install and tighten the bolts in pairs. This is because the retaining clip might slip off.

When I put the OEM roof rack on my Tacoma, we intended on using the torque specs. But, even that felt like overkill on those little bolts. I think we torqued the first bolt to spec, and the rest we just did by feel.

I had no leaks when I traded it in. Although, I did trade it in within a year of the installation.

I’m convinced the people who lose the brackets while taking the bolts out are the people that push down on the bolts while loosening them forcing the brackets out of position. If you just loosen it up with a ratchet, then spin it out with a drill while avoiding putting weight on it they don’t fall out and it’s fine.

When you've hit that butter zone tightening, you've already over tightened. If you don't have a torque wrench, just barely snug is fine. Go to harbor freight and pick up a cheap one.

I've heard this from several places on the internet, but at the same time I've seen Rack installs where they use an impact drill and just zip out the bolts one at a time. Does anyone know what this bracket or bolting mechanism looks like? They appear to be threaded in the frame but do move so I can see there is a bracket. I just don't see how it can fall out by doing one at a time, given that when both bolts are removed it doesn't fall out of place?

Lots of good tips here to keep from losing the brackets into the headliner. Thanks, all great info! I have many torque wrenches of many ranges that I've used for many years. Can anyone verify the 31Nm spec? :)

I thought I read it was 14ft lbs. 22 seems way too much (converted). I mean you don’t need to go crazy, snug is all I would do

edit: a few posts up in this thread have the official instruction

NOTE: DO NOT use electric tool with torque greater than 10 ft-lbs to tighten to snug. Run each fastener down (Do not fully tighten).
    (l) Verify all the end supports and the pads are fully seated and are snug and properly fitted to the roof ditch mold (Fig. 5-5).
    (m)Starting from the rear supports, torque M8 wafer head screws to 18.0 Nm ± 3Nm (13 lbf-ft).

A few posts above is for the Pro basket rack (which is the same as the link I posted in my original post), which uses a different washer stack. I'm removing the Pro rack and installing the non-Pro rails; I might not have made that clear, my bad. The spec I thought I had seen for the non-Pro rack is 31 Nm, which is 23 lb-fit, but darn if I can find that PDF again.

When all else fails, call a friend inside the company.

Key point. You need to install "Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1324" to the bolt threads.

Torque is 23 N-m or 17 ft lbs
