So I recently purchased this 2021 TRD Off Road and on the front grill bar there are two small what look like mounting brackets. Which I have been using google Lens and Chat GPT to identify with no luck. I've only examined them from the outside so far as the current temps 17 - 25 f are not ideal for working outside in the snow. If any of you happen to know what they are and could let me know that would be great. upload_2026-1-4_14-23-45.jpgupload_2026-1-4_14-26-52.jpgupload_2026-1-4_14-27-19.jpgupload_2026-1-4_14-31-39.jpgupload_2026-1-4_14-32-50.jpgupload_2026-1-4_14-23-45.jpg upload_2026-1-4_14-26-52.jpg upload_2026-1-4_14-27-19.jpg upload_2026-1-4_14-31-39.jpg upload_2026-1-4_14-32-50.jpg

The locations suggest it may be for a winter grill cover?

Judging from the condition of those brackets, someone de-whistled that 4R somewhat violently.

Gen 1 KLR. I no longer have it, that was back in 2006 I think. Current DS is a WR250R.

Hey! Another KLR owner here! I loved that bucket of bolts. 1991 model that I bought back in 97 with almost no miles and the bold Ken and Barbie graphics. Never mounted any deer whistles on it. Ended up putting over 50k miles on the bike and finally sold it in 2021 to finance my sliders.

It was the best ever fair-to-middling, unrefined, but generally acceptable motorcycle you could ever hope to own. Cheap, reliable as shovel, and a faithful companion that’s never quite worth going through the trouble of selling. Especially if the tires and chain/sprockets still have a little life left in them. Sometime in the mid 2000s, afterI realized the KLR was probably not going away for a long time, I painted her black and put on some nice HID lights in a Dakar type fairing. She cleaned up good.

Current DS is the 4runner lol.

    Ah, memories.

Deer whistle. I learned something new today. I wonder if I could adapt an Aztec death whistle to work with those mounts.

    ^ That sounds intriguing.
Years ago while camping in Anza-Borrego during a July 4th holiday, someone set off a firework that sounded like they were killing some kind of ancient animal. The shrieking lasted about 10 seconds and it was enough to think WTF was that.
It must have come from the neighbors next door ( Mexico ) as it was totally different and awesome.

For some reason or another, I haven't seen Joe Dirt.
I need to git out more...

Maybe I can tolerate DS a little more now that I'm older.

Tell me more of this “death whistle.”

And nobody need respond with an AI copy/paste!!!! What I’m hoping for a “gather round” story from the Cap.

Maybe it was a deer that wanted a closer look at what was making that racket? I’d check to see if those bumper cover clips are still holding tight! :D

I’m honored! A request for a folksy anecdote! (Remember. You asked for it.)

A couple of years ago my daughter traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico as part of her undergraduate studies. Her trip coincided with the Dia de Los Muertos festival (that’s the Day of the Dead). Among the many sights and sounds she experienced, she was excited to tell me about the Aztec death whistle. It is made of clay and designed to emit a haunting fear-inducing sound. She heard multiple stories about it from the locals, including her hosts. She heard two stories, mainly. Supposedly the whistle was used by the Aztecs to invoke fear in their enemies in battle. The other story involved use of the whistle during human sacrifices to maximize the terror of the victim.

After hearing my daughter’s account I did some research. Actual scholars are reluctant to confirm the folkloric tales that she brought home with her, citing a lack of any archaeological record of the whistle’s use, although examples of the whistle were found at Teotihuacan near the Pyramid of the Sun, where ritual human sacrifice was performed.

As my favorite friends and family age along with me, at holiday time it becomes increasingly difficult to find “just the right gift”. But who wouldn’t want to be the first guy on his block to have an Aztec death whistle of his very own? So I sourced and obtained a few of the esoteric items to give as gifts. The descriptions of the whistle’s sound I received from the recipients ranged from “startling” to “terrifying.” The death whistle is aptly named, definitely sounding more like a scream than like any “whistle” I’ve heard before. Having heard it myself, I’m inclined to believe the folklore.

Maybe I could get an air horn kit and modify it …

Appreciate the story…interesting. Is there any technique or musicality involved when invoking this death scream? Is it a type of instrument that benefits from a skilled user?

Or does it “just work” for anybody with a general interest in sowing fear?
