My 1989 was totaled in an accident. I am fighting the insurance company for a better payout. They want me to provide comps of recent sales of 1989 4Runners in New York. I can’t find any! They are busting my balls and reject sales from other states. if you know of any NY sales with the vin number of the vehicle please let me know. I valued my truck in the 17,000 to 23,000 range. It was clean and rust free. It was a v6 too 230000 miles.
    many help appreciated
    Scott

Thanks for the reply. I will try the suggestions. I am dealing with state farm insurance. I don’t know how to post Pixs. Thanks Scott

This is a cautionary tale. Cars this old with standard insurance will not be valued at the amount we know they are worth.

The insurer is looking at it as a used car and will not give you collector value for it.

Edmund says the used car value for this is probably around $3300. I'm guessing that's what they pitched to you. And finding sales of your car in NYS is going to be tough, they are all rotted away and have gone to the junk yards.

The thing is, when you tell the insurer that you have a 30 year old car...they give you a really low rate with the understanding that if it gets totaled, they are not paying much. Otherwise, you need to make sure your coverage exceeds that. I am not sure if you can cover an everyday car with "agreed to" coverage as that rider usually has lots of stipulations. Like for my 85 Capri, it can't be driven much (like a few thousand miles per year, if that) but the premium is super cheap and it is covered for $15k.

This catches lots of people in the collector car market. You need the proper coverage or sad things like this happen.
