Also looks like a couple of other things, such as:

Very expensive labor hours to reach items underneath all of that fragile looking spaghetti.

Any technician that reaches their hand in that mess is probably going to break something.

I wouldn't have as much issues with the mess if as many parts are metal as much as possible. Imagine how it is to work on after the power train warranty expires and the vehicle has seen 200k miles of heat and vibration.

I guess we will see in 5 years how it all shakes out and the first buyers are out of powertrain warranty.

Lots of extra heat because of the turbo.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 36 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 36yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
….but look how far we’ve come in 35yrs…

    Maybe so.

Personally, I would rather have Goldie than a 6th Gen.

They definitely saved a couple bucks by neglecting an engine cover. Kinda makes me wanna throw up looking at it.

I'm thinking Toyota didn't want to trap all of that heat from the turbo under a cover.

Better a visual rat's nest than a literal rat's nest like it often happens with the 5th gen V6...

Yep, I had two 1985 4Runners with the 22RE. One had 300K+ miles on it when I sold it when moving from Hawaii. The only thing I did to that motor was a valve job and a timing chain. I replaced 2 clutches also. I wish I kept both

For amusement, this is the engine bay of the canceled "flagship" Lexus LS that a few folks here jerk off to:

It's important to note that, that's the simpler gas only version, since there is no orange part. The hybrid version is even busier.

Here is a view of the LC250 with the same set up. I guess not the end of the world but I certainly look forward to hearing from people with these things how working on them is like.

Speaking of 35 years ago...this was one of my favorite engine bays of all time.

1UZ in the first gen LS400. Their layout went haywire in 2017 when they went to the V35A turbo six that's now made famous by the 22+Tundra/Sequoia/GX550 saga.

You gotta shell out for a higher trim to get it off the lot

I still have nightmares from working on 2010 era 7 series bmw. Twin turbo v8 that had a pretty cover on top. But once you popped that cover off... as a tech you were preemptively ordering almost all new plastics (even as service writer would complain) because simply reaching your hand inside to undo a coupling would dismantle the first plastic.. then the next... by the 3rd v8, I would do that job with a vacuum because of how bad they crumbled apart.

The haywire started a decade earlier in 2007 with the LS460. It basically just the Tundra/GX 4.6L V8 with direct injection, but with a lot more clutter added:

People said this about the new bronco too. As much as I don’t like the new engine, the looks of it don’t matter. Most people never open the hood or they do and don’t know what they’re looking at anyway.

Edit: One guy on FB thought the filter element on the secondary injection pump was a temp adjustment knob to account for climate. Not sure if he was BSing but I won't be surprised if he wasn't.

Most likely no more need for a literal rat's nest. The smorgasbord is right there for the feeding.

^Rodent damage typically occurs when there's a nest. Here there is no warm sheltered space like in 5th gen under the intake manifold.
Yes and most Australian off-roaders would be pleased with this engine bay, as they are used to inline-4 turbodiesels.

The looks is one thing but how long term end user friendly is what I care about. Maybe I'm in the minority of 4R buyers and not the target audience of the 6th gen, but I like to do my own routine checks and maintenance to an extent.

I remember old episodes of motorweek would make comments on ease of maintainance on their videos but stopped doing it.

I recall at one point I was pissed that on a Chrysler LX platform charger I had to disconnect the airbox hose just to change one of the headlight bulbs. Then I found out how many cars started to require disassembly of the bumper cover just to change bulbs.

It's what it is, I guess.

You need to add a label maker to the toolbox when working on one of those so you actually know how to reconnect everything. What a mess.

In my case at my age, i will need to take a video recording to make sure I get all the parts back in order and all fhe smaller parts and connectors accounted for.
