It’s a good reminder of why you don’t want to neglect coolant changes.

3 LC200s in the extended family. All over 200k. Nay a problem. Infact I had a 2009 myself for 6 years. Hence my handle name.
If I could get my hands on one even today at a reasonable price, I would sell the 4runner in a jiffy.

I can’t really see this denting their reputation and value much in the general public’s eye, there’s people still buying used 2.4 and 2.0T Hyundai’s and Kia’s after all.

This is not the first time he has said 5.7V8 on LC, Tundra and 4.6V8 on GX460 are not one of best Toyota engines vs 5th gen 4runner engine is one of best Toyota engines.

They were following the book interval set by Toyota accountants. But at least the remedy is simple - change the coolant at ~half the book interval, just like Subarus.

AMD is dramatic. Every self professed pro is. Listen to him and absorb what works for you and discard the rest. Remember, he is in the business of repairing cars.
I have seen his video where he goes on about 5k oil changes. And how the engine will explode if you go a mile over. I am about to touch 200k and for the first 150k I did 10k oil changes. Even now, I hover between 7 to 8k between changes. Just to be on top of things. Everything still works as intended. I also know a few fellow owners that follow a similar routine.

I'm only joining the party to see the responses. I don't know enough to have an opinion either way on the v8's

Oh, V8's are always better than everything. Turbos are evil, and 4 cylinders are for losers.

    There.

    I think I covered everything..

    Wait!

    Ummm...

    There's no replacement for displacement!!!!!

    Oh, except for turbos.

    :bored:

I'll have to say, I fall into the v8 bruh crowd. I loved the 4.7 HO in my 04 JGC and also love the 5.7 in the 14 JGC. If the jeep were more reliable, I wouldn't even be on this forum :)

I haven't had an issue with either of the engines (knock on wood - 215k on the 4.7 and 120k on the 5.7 so far) but the electronics suck on the latest. One of the reasons I'm not a fan of them in vehicles.

If the 4runner had been offered with the tundra 5.7 v8 (which should have fit given its size, the JGC has same size in smaller package but engine bay is PACKED), then I would have bought one

you would be surprised, people buying land cruisers and sequoias change the oil tires and brakes and thats about it. Toyota has made practically everything into no maintenance items, nobody checks the diffs, trans, and coolant these days. I would bet $100 that Land Cruiser never had the coolant touched.
Sure the problem lies in the block and machining and if i had to guess the reason #5 and #7 are constantly the bad ones would be the spacing of the coolant passage from the block into the head, the spacing of the hole is too close to the cylinder. Had the hole been drilled about 0.100" higher up away from the cylinder there would likely be no way it would ever blow out. I can only suspect that #5 and #7 coolant passage is closer than the others to the cylinder hence why they must be the most likely to blow out. Its either that, or the temp at which the coolant passes thru that passage due to how its transfered thru the block/head. The old 3vz engine was like that, the water passing thru the head on the drivers side was so close to the exhaust and super heated the water and caused them to blow head gaskets like crazy.

Is he actually testing the coolant to see if it is bad? Modern coolant is pretty good. I think most people never change their coolant ever. I personally don’t worry about it unless I plan on trying to keep a vehicle to 200K. Even then I will usually just wait until I need to change a water pump or something and change the fluid then.
