Locking Fuel Cap

Has anyone installed a locking fuel filler cap on their 5th gen (2022) 4RUNNER?

I want one, but two of our local Toyota dealer parts departments have told me there is not an official Toyota OEM locking fuel filler cap for the 4RUNNER! WTF.

(Or is the problem that two of my local Toyota dealers parts guys do not know what they’re talking about, or are too lazy to properly look this up?

Has anyone found a suitable after market brand locking gas cap that can be trusted not to leak fumes or pressure so as not to set off a computer code? For 2022 SR5 Premium 4WD.

If there is in fact an official Toyota part for this, can you please furnish me with the part number?

What is your concern? There is an anti-siphon system built into the filler neck. This has been built into all cars for many years. That's why you see news clips of thieves drilling holes in the bottom of fuel tanks recently.

 

I have one on my 2020. Ordered from Amazon I believe. Possibly a Stant locking cap.

 

When I get home this evening I’ll send over the one I have and has given me no issues…..

 

I haven't found an OEM approved one yet. Have tried several name brand aftermarket caps, all turn on the check cap warning after a few starts. So I just settled on one and use the OEM cap instead unless I'm expecting to park in a questionable area.

 

Would it be worth going through that trouble?
Here in CO, thieves just drill the gas tank and easily steal gas.

 

True, but helps preventing kids from dumping stuff in.

It's not just about preventing gas theft...there's been a bunch of reports around here of "kids" with nothing better to do that are pouring stuff into the gas tank for no other reason than to cause harm.

 

Now that is a concern.

 

Toyota Canada had a repackaged Stant available at the dealer, but that was discontinued many years ago. The Stant is also discontinued by parent company MotoRad and superseded by

MotoRad MGC791 (order a Stant and the parts store will ship you a MotoRad without notification). The MotoRad has been reliable in my 4Runner for the past 10 months.

 

Makes me wonder if I should get a skid plate for the fuel tank like I installed a CAT shield to protect those?

 

They usually leak and you can easily defeat them by pushing down hard onto them and twisting.

 

Having a locking gas cap would be nice, but from all the threads I’ve read, finding an aftermarket cap that is as reliable as the OEM seems elusive.

 

That was one that I tried. Turned on the cap warning. Returned it to Amaz. Stock cap so far is the only one that seals for me.

 

^Yeah only 60% of buyers gave the MotoRad 5 stars. Quality probably isn't that consistent on the $11 cap, and that's the best locking cap on the market...

$29 GT139L Locking Fuel Tank Cap , Black

GT139L and it threw a check engine light on the second startup. That's a GM OE part. Maybe the GM filler mouth is shaped slightly differently from Toyota's. Put the MotoRad back on and the check engine light didn't come back.

I just picked up my first ever 4RUNNER last week. After I got it home and was drooling over it some more, I was dismayed to discover that it did not have a locking fuel filler door with an inside release. Seriously? Lol….

I found a beautiful 2022 SR5 Premium 4WD. Black interior. Certified, by my Toyota dealer. I also purchased the Toyota Extra Care warranty to help cover things up to 7 years or 125,000 miles.

I sold off my 2006 Tundra Double Cab SR5 TRD 4WD to enable me to get the 4RUNNER.

MotoRad MGC791. Worst case you have to return it or eat the $11. 60% chance it'll be fine, as with mine.

Stant 10504 fits really good will let you know if it fails.

 

Any issues with these so far? When I first bought my 4Runner I was surprised it doesn't have a locking fuel door like most modern toyotas

 

Just install a locking fuel door, I did that on my ram 3500.

 

Sounds simple, but I've never seen a locking fuel fill door for a 5th gen 4R. And, I don't believe the fuel fill door is removable.
