Having only owned a 4Runner since 2022, I’ve often been confused when I came across terms like Trail or Venture. So I investigated which trims were available in each model year. Data acquired from Edmunds.com. I do not vouch for its accuracy, though I have no reason to suspect it either. Click on the year to see a feature comparison of that year’s trim levels:

    2010, 2011, 2012, 2013
    SR5, Trail, Limited.

    2014
SR5, Trail, SR5 Premium, Trail Premium, Limited.

    2015, 2016
SR5, Trail, SR5 Premium, Trail Premium, TRD Pro, Limited.

    2017, 2018
SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD OffRoad, TRD Off Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited.

    2019
SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD OffRoad, TRD Off Road Premium, Limited, Limited Nightshade Edition, TRD Pro.

    2020
SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD OffRoad, TRD Off Road Premium, Venture Special Edition, Limited, Nightshade Edition, TRD Pro.

    2021
SR5, Trail Special Edition, SR5 Premium, TRD OffRoad, TRD Off Road Premium, Venture Special Edition, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, TRD Pro.

    2022

I also thought the new land cruiser 250 should be a 4runner trim level. And what’s up with a LC, LC? They couldn’t think of another name? lol. I wouldn’t be surprised if they make a LC 250 pro or some equivalent. And of course whatever they make we buy, lol.

Nightshade Edition, Venture, Trail….TSS; some of these trim/model/edition descriptors a lot of times come from Toyota products sold by Southeast Toyota Distributors (based out of Florida- called SET, and Gulf States Toyota-GST, based out of Houston).

SET and GST create their own special editions not sold in other Toyota regions. GST and SET are the last two independent Toyota distributors. They do things a little different from Toyota Motor Sales.

I worked for GST for almost ten years as a District Sales Manager. They were great to work for.

    Maybe this is helpful….

Probably like the flavor of the month kind of thing. One with a basket, one with leather, one with or without this or that, a new badge here and there. Prices keep going up for any little weird customization thing. They know the average family gets excited over these things.
