From time to time I need to drive short distances with my 2014 4runner lift gate partially open. Is there a way to disable the chime alarm either by removing a fuse or doing something that makes the electronics think the lift gate is closed. Appreciate any suggestions that can be offered.

I can say that Carista does not have that option in case you are wondering.

Not sure what type or where it is on a 5th Gen but there either a push/plunger switch or a contact pad that tells the vehicle the hatch is closed, if it's a plunger switch you can either tape it pushed in or rig up something to hold it in, for a contact pad you would have to rig a jumper to connect the contact points.

You can take a screwdriver and push the hatch door latch mechanism closed. Just make sure you open it again before attempting to close the hatch, otherwise you’ll damage it. Maybe put a big strip of duct tape on the hatch door to remind yourself.

The idea I had was to use a small carabiner to push in the latch. (2 clicks) leave the carabiner in the latch and use it to tie down the hatch door.

That too would also work. Comes down to what best suites your needs, for OP.
