Let's talk tires

So I have two TRD ORP's that will be here in the next 2 weeks. Both have TRD Pro wheels.

I ordered a set of 265/70/17 Ridge Grapplers from Discount Tire for the first one.

I am on the fence about ordering another set of Nitto's or a set of K02's for the second. From what I have read the Nitto is likely quieter in the highway.

I mentioned when I introduced myself that I am coming from more of a luxury brand background so this is all new to me. I will say the reason for swapping out the Dullers is 100% appearance and styling. These vehicles will see little to no off road miles.

Should it be Nitto's X 2 or a heads up BFG/Nitto comparison?

Your ORP’S are coming with Duelers?

Mine came with Dunlop Grandtrek,

 

I see newer 4Rs come with Bridgestone Dueler HT vs I think pre 2020 came with Dunlop Grandtrek AT20.

As for OPs question I can confirm that Stock Nitto Terra Grapplers are noisier than KO2s. Meaning KO2 is quieter than Nitto Terra Grappler. No experience with Ridge Grapplers. Its not an option for me here in CO with winter conditions. I would say take your time and search around the forum for tire options as there are other good tire options as well (Falken Wildpeaks, Goodyear wrangler duratrac, Open country AT3, General grabber, etc...).

 

I am currently running the Nitto Ridge Grapplers on my Runner and they are awesome. Had the KO2's on my Tacoma and once you hit a certain speed (70-80MPH) they start to get loud.

Like you stated, the Nitto's are extremely quiet! I have taken my Runner through snow, dirt, mud, sand, etc.... and the Nitto's did fantastic.

Not to bash the KO2's because they perform extremely well, but the loudness of them got old real quick.

 

2021 4Runner Limited here so not quite apples to apples, but stock tires were Duelers which I swapped out within 300 miles for a set of Michelin LTX Defenders. Much better tire all around, more comfortable/less noise, and no “tramlining” which were my biggest gripes with the Duelers. As background I came from a 2019 Audi Q7 Prestige before this vehicle. I run the Nitto Ridge Grapplers on both my 4Runners. Very good tires. I have not run the KO2 so can't say anything about them.

You can flip a coin on the Grapplers and the KO2’s. They are both fantastic tires. Both look meaty. I’ve only run the KO2’s and LOVED them. I have a friend who runs the grapplers and likes them as well.

The Dunlops and the Bridgestones have BOTH been OEM on the ORP's for years. When I bought my '17 ORP it had the Bridgestones on it...but others sitting on the dealer lot had the Dunlops.


To the OP's question, I currently have Ridge Grapplers on my ORP and they have been a good tire. Not too noisy at all IMO. The Goodyear Duratracs I had on my Tacoma were MUCH louder. I have no experience with the BFG's.

Right now I have about 35,000 miles on my Ridge Grapplers. The tires are still in great shape, but the wet traction is definitely starting to get worse.

 

Another option that is aggressive looking, and performs well are the Cooper discoverer AT3. I ride these on my TJ around town and trails quiet for what they are. For more aggressive terrain I will swap to my Mickey Thompson MTZ’S. Looks over function, don’t know.

Have 1x1 for the 2 vehicles. Then you could truly compare, and give us feedback.

Yeah, but nothing compared to "which oil is best?".

 

I have RG's and reviews had me concerned with wet traction. They have less than 500 miles on them right now and I haven't had any issues as of yet on wet roads. I can say they're louder than the Michelin Defender LTX's I had on there, but not that bad. The Michelin's are fantastic tires but damn they look like donuts.

 

What PSI do you run?
I see some running high PSI on lighter vehicle like 4Runner (compared to trucks that should be running LTs) and complaining about traction. I'm thinking running high PSI on something like 4Runner that does not put much weight on the LT tire might result in a very small contact patch on road.

 

I'm running pretty high. I have the SL rated tires and I'm running them at around 40 warmed up. 44 is max on these. I have them set a little higher to offset some of the 4R's squishiness until I decide which suspension upgrade to go with. But, like I said, I haven't had any traction issues yet. Then again, I can't really recall ever having traction issues on any car in the rain. I do try to be an attentive and situationally aware driver at all times...and ultimately, pretty slow. So maybe that's why.

 

Couple on interesting things.

My 2 ORP's appear to have been built the same day. One had Dunlap's and the other Bridgestones. IMO the Dunlap was a better looking tire.

I put Nitto's on the first and love them.

Picked up the 2nd 4runner yesterday and Discount Tire called Tuesday saying the Ridge Gapplers (6 ply) are on national backorder. Not sure what I am going to do.

I called Nitto and they said it was unlikely that the Ridge Grappler would be in stock before Feb 2022.

The leaves me with the KO2 or the WildPeak. I understand the Falkin is a 4ply.

Would it be terrible on MPG to run the Ridge 10 ply? It is available.

 

I have had great luck with Connti's, but this is my son's and he wants something with a super aggressive sidewall.

 

I have driven KO & KO 2's for 20 Years and most likely close to a million miles on multiple vehicles with sizes up to 37", for me it's the most versatile off/on road tire. They are not loud at all comparing with other brands I tried; snow, rain, rocks, mud, city, freeway. An American made product, proven his worth. Just me & many others. I don't have to tell ya, I'm a fan.

I do the same type of trailing like in the video & never had a flat.

2 people on this forum recommended TOYO Open Country AT3 , I'm glad I got them. I used to run Nokian Rotiva AT before on little SUV i liked them.

I wonder about this myself. We're supposed to run higher PSI with an LT due to load ratings, but I still don't understand why. I can't seem to find an actual explanation of the physics involved. It always seemed to me that it should be based on vehicle weight and tire sire.

 

Tires, oil, oil change intervals, fuel and oil treatments, etc. Typically any scenario where there's a combination of opinion and lack of data. Which unfortunately is not restricted to car forums or the internet. Though I admit I haven't run across much of that on this here fine forum yet.

 

Well, I am just going to put some KO2's on his tomorrow. C load with double black side walls.

It will be a great sided by side comparison. 2 ORP's, built the same day, 1 with KO2's and 1 with Ridge Grapplers.

The thing that hung me up on the KO's was reports of poor wet traction on TreadWell and TireRack. He is a young driver. But then I think, how could they be the best selling AT tire if they were that bad.

Still wont stop the debate. LOL
