Not from the point of performance but from protection. Tying into the previous post about fluid film for protecting against sand/ salt whats the best option ( air filter) for protecting our engines.

OEM paper or similar. They made it thinner but I believe Wix makes the thicker version. There's a whole thread on it but I haven't looked.

IMO the Japan made OEM with pre-filter thing.
Not the USA made one with no pre-filter.

    Filters gonna filter!

In before someone chimes in with K&N washable, more smiles per gallon, more power, higher MPGs and more rods to the hog's head.

As far as I've seen so far, popular air filters sold for our cars can range from 98% efficiency to 99.9% efficient (that's not including filters like K&N......those could be worse). When you see the difference in what gets past the filter between that range, you might take air filters more seriously (or you might not).

Take a look at the video below if you're interested. Start at the 7:20 mark if you want the quick and dirty. There's a really good visualization of the difference between a 99% efficient filter and a 99.99% filter.

My takeaway is to dig into the efficiency ratings if they are disclosed. Even filters that look thick with a prefilter (like the Napa Proformer) can have a shitty 98% efficiency rating.

The average Joe/Jolene 4runner owner isn't going to know the difference on which air filter they run. OEM is more expensive than most. I've been running the WIX 49350. It is about 10 to 15 dollars cheaper than OEM.

The K&N clan are hysterical on this site. If you oil it too much you damage the MAF sensor. Too little and it’s not filtering. Waste of Fing money.

Don't talk down on K&N filters. They have the highest air flow to increase hp and they can very well filter boulders from entering into the engine.

We have used: Ac Delco, Fram and Wix. Truck is still running, they must filter air.

Ive use K&N on many vehicles, but not my 4Runner. There is certainly nothing wrong with them, they can increase flow and may let in an insignificant amount of additional dirt. They can be cleaned and reused, lasting a lifetime and saving money. But you cant do it if your an idiot. If you cant figure out how to oil it properly, please dont buy one. We dont need a dripping oily mess or an improperly oiled filter on anyones car.

You're correct. I based my post on my own experience on my Honda Pilot. Even though i followed the instructions to a "T" my MAF sensor still failed ( i was able to clean it and it was fine). My point, and yours, is MOST people dont follow the instructions. Adding more oil does not mean it will filter better.
