I’m just curious how I should go about carrying a yak on one side of the roof of my 2021 Runner and a storage box on the other half. I don’t have crossbars so I can go longer than factory. I have a pair of Thule kayak carriers but lord knows I’d like to go cheaper than Thule for hard storage. I’m sure I’m over complicating things. Thanks guys!

    Welcome to the forum!

Assuming that when you say cargo box you mean something like a Thule or Yakima aerodynamic box and not a Pelican or Plano case.

Here are some things to consider which if used in some combination might be a solution:
    • You can get cross bars as wide as 65 inches. Maybe wider.
    • or you could get crossbars that use pipe or square tubing or 80/20 extrusion and make the bars as wide as you want.
    • Kayak J-cradles to carry the kayak on its side so it’s narrower on the roof rack.
    • A rooftop box that opens from the rear, so that when it’s opened the width doesn’t increase.
    • You may need 3 crossbars; the kayak will want the widest spacing possible but the rooftop box may require closer spacing.
    Cheers!
