I'm headed to Baja for 10 days of offroading and don't have time to order and install a hidden winch (thinking Warn Evo). Is there any other way to use a winch that's not attached to the vehicle? I have recovery straps and MaxTrax but am getting nervous I'm not prepared. Thanks in advance.

They sell cradles to hold a which, and the cradle is mounted in the hitch. Some folks prefer to have a cradle winch so that they can put on a front hitch, and be able to winch from the front or back. The only down side is storing the winch inside, and moving it around.

Been on many trails without a winch and the Key to worry free is.... If you are not sure if you can drive up it, thru it or never done it Don't do it unless you are willing to take on the work to get it back out, Don't Try to Impress others with that "Hey look what I (think) I can do.... oh you can use a High lift jack as a winch too however it is a bit of work to do so and need to get all the right gear (Everyone forgets the 4.5 inch clevis). and need to have anchor point at BOTH ends.

Multiple passengers in one vehicle = going alone as far as recovery is concerned.

Going alone requires a different mindset. @wdsteven ’s comment is right on. You have to commit to the work of getting out. If that’s the case, then water, food, and shelter should be part of the recovery equation. You should also be real about knowing your own physical fitness, and realize your capability will be diminished in hot sun. Pace yourself, work smart not hard, and consider all option, including abandoning vehicle if life/limb are threatened.

I’ve seen these “dicing with death” documentaries and love them. They help show the attitude and work needed to get through tough spots.
