This is the fourth time this has happened to me since I bought my 2022 T4R SR5 Premium 4WD in November of ‘23:

Last week as I came back out to my T4R in a store parking lot, there was a note tucked under the windshield wiper.

The note contained a phone number asking me to call if I was interested in selling my T4R. Sheesh. I don’t have a for sale sign on the truck. Lol!

Through the countless vehicles I’ve owned in my life, I’ve never had this happen with any other vehicle I’ve owned.

Not one of these four times did the person just wait for me to come back out to my truck to talk to me in person. They just leave notes! In last week’s case, I was in a hardware store for just one item only. I made a bee-line in and out. I probably wasn’t in the store for even five minutes.

Wouldn’t you think if someone had that much hots for a particular vehicle they would try waiting around for the owner to show up to talk to them in person? I mean, if it was like at a grocery store, hardware store, or some such quick stop sort of place?

Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon, with their T4R, or any other vehicle for that matter?

I think of it like those "we want to buy your house" calls and letters. They probably want to low ball and hope you don't know any better. If they were willing to pay what it's really worth they can find one on the regular market.

What do you consider less awkward/creepy?

    A) Leaving a random note on your windshield asking if you want to sell your vehicle and hoping you contact them?
    B) Standing beside your vehicle and WAIT for you to show up (I think they call this stalking) so they can have that same awkward conversation face-to-face?

I sold my 1997 4runner with 230k, it did have the center lock, was a fully loaded and always garaged SR5. I walked out of Home Depot, the guy asked me if it was for sale and offered my $10k, I thought he was joking. It had almost zero rust and I was the only owner.

I think that leaving a note is more practical than wait for the owner for maybe an hour just to hear No as an answer : )

The person leaving the note doesn’t know if the owner/driver might be a woman or younger driver who might be uncomfortable if they just stood there waiting. This happened several times with my Gen 1 Tacoma TRD Prerunner. Just like the Gen 4 4Runner will be, they were unicorns a few years later.

If it were me, I'd leave a note too, probably with a longer blurb about my hopes and why.

Wouldn't want to waste time since there's no way to tell when the owner is returning plus don't want anyone creeped out or spooked by some stranger hovering.

But I'm also a little surprised, 5th gens are practically dime-a-dozen. (okay, not really but they're common)

Maybe yours is a less common spec like a Premium without a sunroof? Pickings were slim before I decided no softex and only CarMax's site lets you exclude features.

I had someone similar do that with my 2005 Accord V6. But someone stopped me at a light and said hey I’ve not seen one those in that great of shape would I sell it? I said thanks but no thanks. The next light he pulls up and says how about $10k and starting giving his phone number. I just thank you but I am keeping my car.

Before moving to central Texas, in addition to my full time job, I used to farm on the side, (actually another full time job / burning the candle from both ends type of a thing) in southeast Michigan, raising cash grain crops- corn, soybeans, and wheat. One day I was fitting ground with one of my tractors, an INTERNATIONAL (IH) 1086. As I came up to the edge of the field to make my turn around , next to a road, a guy stops and flags me down. We started a conversation. He told me if I ever wanted to sell my 1086 (pronounced "Ten Eighty Six) that he would like for me to call him, and he gave me his name and phone number. At the time I told him that I didn't know if or when I would ever sell it. He said no problem just a "keep my number in case you change your mind" type of thing.

Well, life happened, and a little over three years later we were fixing to move to Texas. I was selling off all my farm tractors and associated equipment and implements piece by piece, but I had kept that guy's number so I tried calling him. He remembered me and he still wanted my IH 1086. I had a price in mind, and he paid it no questions asked. He was as happy as a pig in slop, ha ha! He also bought three other major pieces of farm equipment from me. Cha-Ching! LOL!

Having been an easy to talk to and get along with farmer for so many years, maybe that's why I don't think I'd mind if someone approached me in person about my T4R. Of course right now I'd have to tell them no, but based on how I was able to so easily sell my 1086 to another farmer who had asked me about it three years prior, I'd probably ask the person for their phone number if they were willing to give it to me. You never know. And, I've actually kept those last two notes I found on my windshield..... just in case. Lol!

For grins and giggles / for anyone curious, here's a piccy of my beloved but now ex IH 1086 farm tractor, taken probably about 12 years ago now. She was very dusty from field work when I shot this pic, but otherwise in great condition. I always took good care of my equipment, just like I look after and care for our two Toyotas today.

If you were to ask me if I miss my farming, I would have to say- YES, I do. :(

    I was a note dropper.

Many years ago I dropped an “if interested in selling please call me” note on a 1968 corvette in a restaurant parking lot. Two months later got a call from the owner, I owned the car the next day.

The poor fellow was having his first child and needed more than two seats.

    you just never know.

I had someone stop me about my 4th gen Firebird. He was all set to leave a note, but he happened to catch me walking up to it.

I wasn't interested at the time, but in retrospect I should have at least shot him a high end price to see what he said.

Yep. Had someone leave a note on my 20 year old Corolla the other day. Car is pretty rough looking on the outside with one fender repainted and one rear quarter panel with some paint cracked when a tree sort of fell on it one time, so it's not exactly "mint" condition on the outside(inside and mechanically it's almost new though)

Nobody has ever left a note on my 2023 4Runner Limited - but back in 2010 when I purchased my 2010 Tacoma TRD Sport I got a few notes asking if I wanted to sell it in the first couple of years I had it. It was a good looking truck - black, hood scoop, TRD front skid plate. Like the OP, I'd never had that happen with any other vehicle I owned - but the Tacoma was easily the coolest vehicle I had ever owned up to then. At the time, I thought it was really odd - probably because it was something that I would probably never do myself.
