What I think is that your timing is excellent. I’m going truck camping in June and was planning this mod before the trip.

Oh, and the writeup is thorough and informative as always.

Great write ups, makes me miss my 4th gen!
I wonder what is different to add the hatch release to a 5th gen with a smart key.

Tangentially related, have you found a way to add a power door lock switch to the rear? Would be great to have a way to lock and unlock the doors at night without having to use the remote.

Yes, on the inside. Idea is to make it easy to lock and unlock all doors when sleeping inside the rear of the 4Runner.

    None (so far)
I have heard this won't work on a Limited because of the smart key system, can anyone confirm or deny?

    Thanks!

Uninformed reply loading - I have a Limited with a smart key. I've slept in my car but don't yet have these internal buttons. I think it would still work as the only time my car gets cranky is when a door is open and the window needs to go up or down or lock the doors care of the hatch buttons. I would not expect this to have issues if the keys are inside the car and you need to use inside buttons. I'll go test it right now and see what happens leaving the keys inside and pushing on the window button on the outside. BRB.

Ha...glad you brought this up @jclay243 . I rolled down the front window for emergency access. I tossed the keys in the back. I could not roll the hatch window up or down with the smart key inside. I could however open the hatch gate. So it seems the anti lock protection with the key inside kicks in but you can at least open the door. I'll test again with my kid in the car and the window rolled up in case that somehow complicated things. I would think rolling the window down would have not been an issue but it did not work either.
