Got my car on 10/16/19, (In order) TRD Racing aftermarket license plate frame, Silicone license plate frame pad, WeatherTech front/back floorliner (grey), TRD Pro 17" OEM (matte black) wheels, BFG A/T K02 265/70/17, Anzo Halo Headlights,Bilstein 6112 + 5160 setup, Eibach 1" Rear Springs, Mobil1 Extended Performance synthetic oil and more to come.
    Guys,

    A few months back, I picked up a '08 4th gen 4Runner V8 4x4 with H4 and L4. My cousin, who is also looking for a 4th gen sent me a listing ('07 4th gen 4Runner V8 4x4) to review.

In the listing, I noticed an image that showed H2, H4, and L4. I've attached the same pic. I'm confused because my 4Runner didn't have the H2 option. Can someone clarify this for me?

You have all time 4wd in your v8. It has a Torsten center differential that allows is like a limited slip setup so it can be in 4wd all the time. When you press the center diff lock button it locks that feature and is now true 100% power front and rear.

the setup pictured above is the standard part time 4wd system.

Thanks for the quick reply and explanation DK!

So... Toyota offered the standard part-time 4wd as a base option and the all-time 4wd as an upgrade? Would you know if these options were available for the V6s? And how long have these options been offered?

So, my buddy has an ‘08 with the 4wd switch pictured in the OP’s first post. 2H, 4H, and 4L.

But he also has what looks to me like a diff lock switch to the left of the steering wheel? It shows the axle with an X through it (if my memory is correct). Did a rear diff lock come standard on an ‘08?

Yes...but not rear....center....you could use the 4th gen. set at 4H at any speed in any highway with the center diff. unlocked....can't with the 5th...

4th gen 2H = rear wheels only any speed, 4H = any speed all wheels with center diff. unlocked, 4L = low speed w/c. dif locked.

So I could drive on dry pavement in 4H and not worry about binding? (With a 4th gen). Am I reading that right?

But once center diff is locked then you can’t?

You got it right provided you don't lock the center diff. (you probably can't at 4H but I never tried)

Awesome! I did not know this to be the case! So, it’s sorta like AWD as far as how/when it can be used, just like a Subaru, for example?

trlhiker......you do what you must........but my '07 owners manual says different (page 165, center) and I know different......I have driven way over 100,000 miles on all kind of dry roads at speed as high as 100 mph+.....I get better gas mileage, my tires wear longer and more uniform with less rotations and my '07 handles better on curves at high speed.......let's put this to rest......

By the way.....if you read above article and pay attention you will see that the opening statement says "we will deal with part time 4WD because full time can............" ......read before you write.....

Going by the picture that has a H2, that is where it should be kept for dry pavement. If all you have are H4 and L4 then by all means you must leave it in H4 which means you have full time 4wd. That is all I was getting at. No need to be asses about it!
