I would push our 4Runner before I let a tesla take up space in our garage! What a poor choice.. getting rid of a vehicle that gobbles up winter and adverse conditions, it's not rocket science to pull the lever into 4WD, my wife figured it out. But of all things owning a tesla is not a problem solver, it's a problem maker. The lasik eye surgery your talking about is like a change from nite to day, my son had it done and couldn't believe he didn't have it done earlier. Good luck OP.

agreed. Id love to see a Tesla try and go through 10”+ of snow. Mine did it like it was 1” deep. Drove from street, over curb and across my front lawn for fun. Wife didnt like that.

lasiik is the best! Did that as well.

Hey bud best wishes to your wife. Have you considered a V6 Honda Passport with all time all wheel drive for your wife? I have a friend who a is a dealer director and he told me about this vehicle and all the research and it uses their old school V6 if gas is not an issue. It’s sort of like the old Limited 4R in this sense.

    Just an idea.

As for me I am keeping my 4R it’s my retirement vehicle for recreation. I’m embarrassed how much I’ve driven so little with helping my Mom with Alzheimer’s and some health issues last year myself.

Best wishes to you an your family

My wife can operate the 4WD lever just fine in the TE and ORP 4Rs that she's driven. It's figuring out the scenario/timing of when to actually engage/disengage 4WD is what she gets confused about sometimes.

Don't get me wrong. She loves the 4R. When we sold our 2016 TE, we test-drove Honda, Mazda and BMW suvs but she didn't like any of them. This is why we decided to get the 2023 ORP. We also planned to drive this vehicle until the wheels fell off.

She actually doesn't like the look and stance of the Model Y, and only still warming up to the thought of using FSD. This research is only being done by me to figure out how to keep her and others safe on the road.

Just sharing my opinion, but FSD seems like I couldn't trust it. I get for some people it will be useful, but I really don't know.

@topdec I see your wife has eye problems and I wear glasses full time myself, but don't have problem with glare. Now, what glare are we talking about? Out of all my 3 vehicles, my ORP is best because it sits so high that I have pretty much non-existent glare from oncoming traffic even from the super bright LEDs like ours. The only glare that does very seldom bother me is the hood scoop glare when the sun is at the perfect angle to give me glare from it, but it's not too bad. Is there any way she can get some specialized glasses for night driving? Maybe get a slight tint for the windshield?

Honestly, hell no to Tesla. Seems like you live in a very cold state, range will suffer and the build quality is awful and seats are so stiff too. I've been passenger in model 3 and Y, I absolutely hated both. I was a keyboard warrior hater for Teslas and experiencing them in person sealed the deal for me.

IMHO, I think you should trade for a low mileage 5th gen Limited. Could that be an option? We also own a 5th gen Subaru Outback which my wife daily drives and with the proper tires that thing is a beast in snow like our 4Runners. We got hammered by that huge snow storm in January here and my wife loves how flawless the Outback is in the snow. Another reason we got the Outback because it's the beater car for us and people here drive like idiots in snow especially pick-up truck drivers thinking they're immune to the icy/slick conditions and we don't want anyone crashing into our 4Runner. Outbacks are even more safe than 4Runners and also since it's a beater it wouldn't break out hearts if someone crashes into it.

For me the issue with Full Self Driving-Supervised comes down to trust. In order to trust the system, you really have to rely on trust with the developer of a system. In other words, you have to trust that they are actually doing what they claim or imply. Unfortunately, Tesla has been really heavy on dubious marketing and claims, and mealy-mouthed “what about other killer cars” defense of their approach to development. They’ve been like that since the beginning, overpromising in the most dangerous way, and using statistics in crazy ways to illogically justify that any “driverless” tech is better than letting people drive.

They’re attempting to sell confidence to a trusting public, not fully vetted technology that they are willing to take responsibility for.

Get her whatever car she will enjoy the most regardless of it's a Tesla or 4Runner or whatever else. Happiness is subjective and life is short.

@topdec There are other choices than Tesla for enhanced safety. My wife and kids all have Subaru Foresters. While they don’t compare to the 4Runner off road, they’re great in all types of weather and have all the latest safety features. That suite of automatic safety features is called, coincidentally, Eyesight. Here’s the table of contents from the manual.
    IMG_5043.jpg
While it’s not self driving like the Tesla, it is otherwise maxed out on the automatic steering and braking safety features.

Entry and egress are easier too.

Foresters built before late 2025 were made in Japan, like the 4Runner. Toyota owns 20% of Subaru.

Yes, a 4wd Limited would be my first choice. I have a 7 seater Limited also, my sister has a Highlander, it seem to have bit more room in the 3rd, but not by much.
The Full Time 4wd of the Limited would make so much sense to you and your wife.

Too many modifications have been made to my ‘23 ORP (which is paid off) so I would never recuperate the money I spent. However, if someone would offer me the exact money spent, Tesla would be the last car I’d buy.

It is first good looking Lexus in a long time, so I get the appeal. However GX550 have granading engine problems, same as Tundras. Why would you willingly dive on that hand grenade? If you want something unreliable, Land Rover even better looking.

I'd need about $80k to let go of my '22 4runner with 30k miles. Then I would just be shopping for another 5th gen....

I've only got a lowly 4th gen but at this point I think I'd need considerably above free market value to even consider selling. The sales guy at the dealer said the guy who traded it in for a Dodge called asking if it was too late to buy it back.

I just bought a 2024 Offroad Prem w low miles less than a week ago. Instant love affair. Fortunately, my wife isn't the jealous type! I plan on having them dig a hole big enough to bury myself AND this 4Runner when room temperate strikes. Maybe just a bit bigger to fit my 2013 Tundra too!:)

At this point I would rather buy a Nissan Armada/Infinity QX80 if I really had to move to a Turbo 6 BOF SUV. Lexus is intentionally throttling production of the GX550 anyway for....reasons.

It will always be British, and further it is a Range Rover. Which means it is garaged in the dealer shop.

Exactly. “good money”. Hell yes I would. I’d take anything over $100K. Fantasy? Maybe. But in a world with so many stupid people it might just happen.

Ive made this mistake! I traded in my first one because after almost 2 years and 25k miles, the trade in value was only 2 grand less than Id paid for it. Regretted it. Traded in my second one, again after almost 2 years and 25k miles, because during the chip shortage, it was worth 5 thousand MORE than I paid for it. Regretted it. Sold my 3rd one for roughly what I paid for it because I wanted a stick shift one more time. Regretted it. This one will be paid off in a few months, the first time I have ever paid off a car as an adult, and I will drive it til the wheels fall off.

Meh I wouldn't touch any Range Rover product even with the glorious BMW B58. I think a X5 or X7 with the B58 would be amazing though... even I just look at CPO/used X5/X7 before BMW took the stupid pill and made ALL infotainments all-touch... even Toyota and Mazda went that route smh.

Got the last of the non nanny/safety 4Runners (2019) and its paid off, so it would take a ridiculous amount of $$$$$$$ for me to be willing to sell it. No less than $100,000... I know what i have!

I'm not cheap, but I can be had. I've owned over 80 vehicles in my life, I purchased my 23 Pro and told my wife it would be the last vehicle I purchased for myself, if the offer was right, I'd sell it. But her car , a 2021 Rav4 Limited Hybrid will need to be replaced, I'm thinking with a GX550.
