If you were offered good money for your 5th GEN, would you sell it?

  1. Yes, if I can get back when I paid for it

    13.5%
  2. Yes, if it can cover the cost of the replacement car

    10.8%
  3. Hell, no

    75.7%

Carmax offered me $43,400 for my 2023 4R ORP with 16,700 miles on the odometer. I paid $46K for it new before taxes.

The reason I was looking into the resale value is because my wife is starting to have problems driving at night and on snow. I've been looking at used Tesla model Ys, but haven't been impressed with online info on reliability.

If it were you, would you sell? If so, what car will you get? If not, why?

    More info after 40+ responses:
This thread is really about my wife's decreasing ability to drive at night due to the glare, and decreased confidence driving in wintery conditions because she can't really tell when she should engage 4WD-Hi.

I think I should have bought a Limited instead of an ORP. It would be easier for my wife to drive in wintery conditions. I myself very rarely engage 4WD-Hi. I enjoy rear-wheel steering. As for the glare, I think Lasik could help, but my wife does not want to have this surgery.

Out of curiosity I just got an offer on mine. Not interested. It's still worth just a little more than I paid for it in June of 24. The dealership I use offered me a really good deal on a 2025 4runner, the 6th gen is why I purchased a 5th gen.

    No!
    I owe $0 on mine.
    Don’t like the 26 look.
I certainly would not by Tesla to replace.
IMHO, EV’s are not the way to go.

Never a Tesla. I prefer to walk before I buy a Tesla. But yes, I will sell the 4runner if I get good money for it. I know I am not going to get a good price for it so it stays.

Tesla won’t be an improvement for normal conditions, let alone night and snow.

I like my 4Runner, it’s solid in most any metric, the rear window comes in handy more often than I would have thought, the fuel economy penalty isn’t as large as I had anticipated and it’s a solid size.

That said, considering current events, I’m not sure off-road trips are in the cards for me in the medium-term and it might be better to have more cash on hand and “down/side-grade” in value. (but taxes, etc. eats up a lot)

I do like the idea of going electric whether PHEV or full BEV for a number of reasons but I’m a picky SOB and nothing really ticks all the boxes. The F-150 Lightning and RAV4 Plug-in, maybe the refreshed bZ/Solterra and the upcoming bZ Woodland are in the ballpark but I’m going to sit tight for now.

Really depends on what you want/need today and how it affects your vehicle requirements and finances.

    Define "good money".

If I get to define it, hell yes I'd sell.

I consider the offer to be "great" because it's a couple of grand under what I paid new before taxes. I also drove it for 16,000 miles in three years. If I can trade in the 4R for the same price as the Carmax buy offer, then it would be an even better deal since I'll be benefiting from tax savings as well.

At this point, I also cannot find a vehicle that would replace the 4R. I'm only drawn to the FSD technology of the Tesla, but not drawn to the Model Y's looks and reliability

Nope paid off after 14 or 16 months & I too don't like 6th gen. Mine has 12,035 since 20-Nov-23 sitting (filthy way too cold to get it washed)in garage.

Yes. My daily driver is the sprinter van. My wife drives the 4R.

i’m just afraid that I might regret the decision again, just like when I sold our 2016 4R TE.

Give me $20k more than I paid for and still won't sell it. Call me a fool but this truck checks all the boxes for my needs.

PS: I understand that not everyone is in this situation. For some people the 4Runner is just their vehicle for the next 3-5 years until they trade it in for something else

I guess I'm neutral on this idea. If the circumstance worked in my favor, I'd do it.

I'm not one of these guys that treat their 4Runner like their 1st born, but I also don't treat my 4Runner like a Pimp treats one of his hookers! I treat my 4Runner like a wife. When she stops giving me what I need and want, it's time for a divorce!

I'm sure the day will come when I divorce my big red headed wife (that's what I call my 4Runner, FYI). I'll trade that bitch in for a newer and prettier model who gives me what I want when I want.....without complaining! Can ya' feel me!!???!?!?

If there was something else that caught my eye I'd sell but not just because of that resale value.
The 4R is my 41st car in as many years of driving so some might say I'm due...
The best I've done was during covid when the dealer called me up after a year and offered me $11k more than I paid for my truck. I took him up on that even though I didn't enjoy its replacement as much.

4R is my camping/off road rig. Tesla is the DD. Best of both worlds but I would never go only EV.

But OP your wife will more than likely enjoy the Tesla so much more than the 4R.

I have a 2nd gen, but when I saw this I thought I'd chime in. Someone offered me $8,000 (CAD) for my 1995 4Runner Sequoia. I said hell no! I see people look at it all the time. But I won't sell it for any money. I. Will. Never. Sell. It.

Yes, I like mine a lot but it is just too big. I also don't tow and don't off road. I'd go back to driving 4-door sedan like I always did. I also miss having a manual gearbox in my daily more than I thought I would.

Sell my '16, no. It's our main freeway flyer/grocery getter. If we drive it on anything more than just a forestry type roads, I'd consider taking my TJ, rock crawler. It also has a better A/C, heater than the 4R.

Tesla's FSD is more "advanced" because the company is less cautious end-to-end. (Which also manifests in it's door handle design, engineering, etc.)

I have a friend's mother who swears by it which I understand - but she also can't/won't reverse manually anymore.

But it's just good enough (apparently) to be dangerous because when it goes wrong it can go wrong big ranging from that Wile E Coyote stunt (due to lacking lidar), to having run more than one red light in aforementioned mom's experience. (but it hasn't stopped her though, she just bought a Model Y to upgrade her 3)

But I'd compare with other driver assists first and consider trading "wow factor" for a safer, more conservative technology approach.

Oh yea and Tesla is going subscription only. Anyways, I would not put my SO into a Tesla long-term.

Oh, Tesla. The FSD system is so... Scary, dangerous, boring, and expensive IMO. For some people, maybe its good. But NEVER for me. What the hell is the point of FSD??? I LIKE TO DRIVE MY CARS!!!!! I DO NOT WANT TO BE DRIVEN!! CARS ARE FUN WHEN THEY MAKE NOISE AND I DRIVE THEM!!!! The FSD system (and Tesla in general) just isn't for me. Don't know if you watch TFL Car and their channels, but they are doing a series on TFLEV called Handsfree 2000 in a new Tesla using FSD. Seeing it is enough. I couldn't drive one. I'd hate every second of it.
