Hey folks! Looking to finalize down a purchase this week. I’m eyeing down a 2018 off road premium in white with 80,000 miles for $30,000. Pricing seems aligned with what I’ve seen but figured I’d get some thoughts. Upstate New York region. Body is in good condition, previous owner added TRD pro take off wheels. Frame seems to be in better condition then most of what I’ve seen on comps. Any thoughts or concerns?

Rust-wise, probably something you can TLC your way to something nice.

Inside the frame is unknown but I'd just hit it with a rust inhibitor? Not sure how pricing would be compared to other similar (or better/worse rusted) examples.

about what I expected. I’ll grind the surface off and flood the insides with fluid film.

    No need to scare him.

That underside it as good as its going to get for a 7 year old 4R.

Underside is nice for a rust belt vehicle, or semi rust belt vehicle.
Can easily spray it all down with rust converter which converts the rust into a waxy paintable surface (primer) and then spray the whole thing down with FluidFilm or WoolWax or others.
The tires are mismatched, not sure if thats a deal breaker for you but it throws up a red flag since the 3 seem to match and have decent tread, makes you wonder if they blew a tire and had to replace, whats the wheel like?

Depending on where this is, you could likely honestly find a bit better pricing elsewhere. A 2018 with 80,000 miles is pretty low mileage, but $30,000 seems a shade high for the age.
I have seen 2018 Limiteds with 120,000 miles around $22,000-$24,000.
If its what you want and the color you want, rock and roll.
    How long have you looked?
    Where have you looked?
Have you looked at a further distance than in your town?
There are good prices to be had if you are looking at a larger radius.

I just bought a 2012 Limited with 180,000 fully decked out, 3rd row, 4wd, auto running boards, crazy good service history, brand new Bridgestone tires on all 5 wheels, brand new brakes, crazy awesome clean paint for $13,300 (their window sticker was $19,000)
Dont settle for $30,000, i would try to talk them down -$5,000 at minimum

Looks to be in good condition for being 7 years old - many other vehicles are ready for the salvage yard at the 10-year mark in upstate NY.

Some of the first things to fail on 5th gens due to rust are the exhaust pipe and fuel tank straps. Both appear to be original on this 4R, so that bodes well for the rest of the vehicle.

Check for other common 5th gen issues at this age:
Steering rack leaks at the bellows
Tailgate rust at the handle garnish due to plastic scratching the paint
Interior leaks from clogged/disconnected sunroof drains

Make sure the rear locker works, in case the previous owner kept it a pavement princess.

You saw 2018 Limiteds at 22-24k because thats about what they are worth. Go look up at ORP with 80k its near 30.

If the owner drops to 25k hes desperate to sell.

sadly within the NYC and update area this seems to be the general price for off roads. $25k nets a sr5 or premium and generally the condition of the past few I viewed was pretty rusted down. We ended up picking up this 4Runner. It was mechanically sound with good oil change and maintenance history.

good call on the tires I don’t even realize that but will most likely be selling these at some point to pick up a set of wild peaks or k02.

the tailgate is in good condition on this with no rust. Others I’ve looked at were pretty bad. No leaks on the sunroof, steering racks appear good. Interior appears brand new for the most part with very little wear. I’ll be adding some new wheels before winter and touching up the rust spots and flooding the rest with fluidfilm. Planning on keeping this guy for the long haul and eventually frame swapping when the time comes.

Not too bad for an 18. I would look under the spare tire if possible. Also shift in 4H and 4L to ensure it works.
