I was quoted $3k for limited trim. Total 8 years VSA. I’m trying to get feel of the market.

Don't we buy Toyotas to NOT need extended warranties?

When I bought mine and they tried to sell me one, I said no thanks, if I was interested in a vehicle that needed an ext warranty I'd be at the Jeep dealer, lol.

Lol, the only reason I’m even thinking about it is because of failure rate of xreas and the expensive replacement cost.

So there's a published failure rate for the XREAS system?

your suspension is wear and tear item. once it gets old... rip it out and put some sweet suspension in it. Then enjoy your truck even more.

I have Toyota Platinum care on all of my Toyotas. Yes, I understand that I'll probably never use it, but if one major electronic thing goes South, it pays for itself. My factory Ford extended warranty on my '03 PSD paid for $25,000.00 (retail) worth of work on it. I will never not have an extended warranty on a vehicle if possible....that's just me.

Anyway, I get the 6 year, 125k mile Platinum coverage for $1600.00. Will my dealership give it to just anyone? IDK. They give to me at that price because I buy more vehicles than most.

Thinking of doing the same, my runner is my family hauler. XREAS makes the long road trips manageable

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
Same with our 99 4Runner. A few minor maintenance details when we first bought it, but we have great confidence in it.

I highly doubt XREAS would be covered under the warranty since it’s a wear and tear item. For the cost of the warranty, plus the cost of XREAS, just save all that and put in high end suspension once it does poop out and enjoy the ride. The only thing I’d count on with the extended warranty would be anything mechanical related to the powertrain, that hasn’t been altered (supercharger, lift, aftermarket components).

Extended warranty = wasted money. If and when xreas craps out and want to keep it stock, there are always people upgrading their sr5, offroad and pro model suspension especially with low miles. Some upgrade right out from the dealership and sell the stock for dirt cheap.

There’s a multiple post in this forum where X-REAS was covered under Toyota platinum VSA. You do have a point about replacing the suspension with the money I’d pay for VSA. Thanks to one of the forum member I’ve found a VSA for half the price I was quoted by my dealer but I wonder if a suspension system more comfortable on road than X-REAS can be found for south of say 1.7k.

I just paid $2055 + tax for a platinum warranty with a $250 deductible. 96 month 100,000 miles. Price was ‘employee discount’ for how much they pissed me off with there shitty service department recently. I am sure I paid more then I should have and that the discount was crap...but I feel better about all the expensive electronics that can fail in the next 8 years. If one or 2 things go, warranty paid for it’s self. Head units are $4000 apparently. Scary. If I trade or sell vehicle before it ends I get reimbursed for time and miles not used.

You guys are paying way too much!!! You don't have to buy it from the dealer you buy the car from. You can cancel it. Email Jennifer Taylor at Lexus of Ann Arbor and she will send you a chart with premiums for the Platinum with 0 deductible for different coverages. She just moved from Wolverine Toyota to Lexus but can still do Toyota Platinum. She doesn't want the chart posted but the I'll just mention that the 8yr/100K 0 deductible is just a bit more than half of what was just posted. She is well known of the Tacoma forum. Show you how much profit dealers make on these.

When I bought my 2008, I got the 5yr extended warranty. Dumbest money I've ever spent. Young, stupid, and lesson learned.

Still pissed I let the sales guy talk me into it. I think it was $1k or $2k at the time. Nothing has ever happened with my 4Runner that wasn't easily fixable myself. And the first five years literally nothing happened. 15 years later, she still runs like a champ despite the beat down I give her in the mountains and deserts.

And I waited on my XREAS to start leaking (after 8+ years) and then took the whole thing off and went with new shocks, coils, etc.

Had I bought off the lot, I would have easily passed.

I wouldn’t have got it on a 2008 either. Doesn’t have a $4,000 touch screen, gauge cluster, or all the stupid safety sense crap.

Extended warranties are pure profit for them, in most cases they know they'll never have a claim. Have I bought extended warranties? Yes, but after thought says it was wasted money, that was on a Silverado, which had 4 'recalls' before we drove off the lot. If I had known about the recalls, we may have looked elsewhere for a new vehicle. While there are probably not any recalls for the XREAS system, 3K is alot to spend for an extended warranty. Salesmen/women are just that, when they talk you into extra addons they know they are making more money at your expense, but that's why they are in "sales", some are better at it than others.

How did the silverado preform for the duration of ownership? What year? 4 recalls off the lot, that’s bad. Only one I have seen so far was the fuel pump for some 4 runners.

pretty sure its rare to have a head unit fail after 3yr/36k.

I hope the ones in the 4 runners are better built vs the ones in GM / Fiat-Chrysler products, because I have seen numerous failures in those vehicles and the price isn’t cheap. As for 4 runners I haven’t heard or seen it personally.

i overheard a sales manager & F&I manager use that exact scenario when trying to push aftermarket warranties onto someone. "did you know i heard a head unit costs $4k to replace in a hyundai?". literally verbatim what is being said here in this thread.

In 2019 I bought my 2013 that had 79K miles on it at the time. They were trying to sell me an extended warranty for $2K. If I remember correctly, it would have covered the vehicle to 125K miles.

I'm now at 136K miles, and the only money I've spent on repairs (that may or may not have been covered by that warranty anyway) was $189 to have the AC topped off in the summer of 2020. That's it. Every other dime I've spent on this vehicle has just been routine or preventative maintenance.

I also got a copy of the Carfax when I bought it, and judging by that it had been serviced at a number of Toyota dealers it's whole life. During that time, it had no services other than routine maintenance.

So that leaves us at a 9-year-old vehicle with 136K on it with no major repairs. I'm glad I didn't buy the extended warranty, and if I were buying one new, I *definitely* would not buy one.

Lol! When they tried to push mine, that's what they told me too. Luckily I already knew that I could get a better, aftermarket unit for less than 1k, so that didn't sway me.

I would be 100% fine with a aftermarket unit, I posted a thread here trying to get information on that because with all the technology now they control settings and such for the vehicle. I wonder if aftermarket ones have that capability
